In October 1969 hundreds of young people, clad in football helmets and wielding lead pipes, marched violently through an upscale Chicago shopping district. This was the first demonstration by the Weather Underground. Outraged by the state of American politics, the organisation waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s.
