In a village in Protestant northern Germany, on the eve of World War I, the children of a church and school run by the village schoolteacher and their families experience a series of bizarre incidents that inexplicably assume the characteristics of a punishment ritual. This is film of the cruel absurd, of the ubiquity and banality of evil. It is Antonin Artaud in moving pictures. It is horrifyingly recognizable and necessarily eye-closing. One is awed at the genius of creating beauty out of monstrosity. One is also ashamed.
