Tom Ricks (Hawke) is a college professor and one time author who has fled to Paris after a scandal costs him his job. Determined to reconnect with his estranged wife and daughter, Tom's attempts are met with hostility. But after Tom attends a literary event and meets the mysterious and beautiful Margit (Scott-Thomas), he finally starts to feel like his life is getting back on track.
