I don't smell the Oscar, but this was a really good movie. It pulled together the coming-of-age tale and the underdog story to create an entertaining story about Italian-american culture in the early 80s. I found myself pulling for the 'guy with the most heart' in the fight, just like the Rocky films, and wouldn't have it any other way.
