Painfully boring, with pacing straight out of a cold maple syrup bottle.
The action sequences felt begrudgingly contrived, when Lara could have just
picked up a gun and ended the movie. In one sequence, the big bad guy even
had his back to Lara as she had a perfect opportunity to run him through
with an arrow, but nope, not going to happen. It felt more like pacing from
an old Eastwood spaghetti western, with long scenes of drawn out,
heavy-handed dialog. Fine for cowboys, wrong for Croft. Vikander is right
for Lara, director is wrong for tomb raider by a country mile.

Having played the two most recent games since the Tomb Raider franchise rebooted--providing a much more nuanced and respectful take on Lara Croft as a heroine--I was excited to see Alicia Vikander cast in her role for the movie. Lara and Vikander are both a refreshment to the tired tropes of action hero. It's just too bad the script and supporting cast fail to deliver anything interesting. I will give props, however, to the cinematography: there really are some amazing shots and sequences in the movie.

The twist was good! I loved that. A little too much special effects. The plane could have been a real plane on a waterfall stage but they did CG. Lara is pretty but not sexualized, and believably tough. I'd like a little more time to like her friend / partner though. Want to hear about his story. I'd like the sets to be more real - indiana style. And a little more complicated riddles to solve and a chance to solve them before she does. But GOOD ones. Not predictable ones. REAL riddles.
