About this movie

TRUTH is the incredible true story of Mary Mapes (played by Cate Blanchett), an award-winning CBS News Journalist and Dan Rather's producer, who broke the Abu-Ghraib prison abuse story, among others. The film chronicles the story Mapes and Rather uncovered that a sitting US president may have been AWOL from the United States National Guard for over a year during the Vietnam War. When the story blew up in their face, the ensuing scandal ruined Dan Rather's career, nearly changed a US Presidential election, and almost took down all of CBS News in the process. This is a clunky, flat movie. The direction is pedestrian, the cinematography is completely unremarkable and the screenplay lacks tension. The film also lacks a feeling of authenticity because it is largely shot in Australia - it just doesn't look like the US and the US accents of the Australian actors are frequently unconvincing and jarring. This may seem like a petty criticism but the film IS about an investigation by US journalists into the actions of a US president so it really can't afford to feel ersatz. At times, Elizabeth Moss looks kind of at sea while on screen and Cate Blanchett just acts her head off in some kind of attempt to make up for the overall limp tone of the film (but then, to be frank, I think Cate Blanchett is a mannered actress whose performances often border on hammy). Give it a miss.
