I ended up watching this after re-watching the original TV show, which had mentally scarred me as a child in the 1980s. I can honestly say that this version is much better, and did a good job of packing in a story which was spread over about 3 hours on television. And, of course, the production and special effects leave the 1980s version looking pretty sad in comparison. Sam Neill did a great job, and it was fun to see that Madeline Sami (who I only know from Taskmaster NZ) had a small cameo as a police officer.
