A redemptive coming of age story about a wayward teen, Jamie (Letitia Wright), who is encouraged by an inspiring and unconventional social worker Kate (Shirley Henderson), to use singing as an escape from her troubled background. Jamie’s loyalties soon become torn between Kate and her possessive and volatile best friend, Leanne (Isabella Laughland).

Urban Hymn is a deep, evocative exploration into the coming of age genre, experimenting with life, loss and love. Michael Caton-Jones handles his characters and his story almost lovingly, with a delicacy and carefulness that reminds one of a parent with a child. This film follows a familiar path, yet takes it in a different direction. The story is set against the backdrop of the 2011 London riots, and the political turmoil of the nation perfectly mirrors the emotional turmoil of our main character Jamie Harrison. Jamie (Letitia Wright) is a troubled teenager, far more nuanced and dangerous than any other to grace the screen. Played with delicacy and strength, Wright leads us on Jamie’s journey to self-confidence and ultimately salvation. Opposite is Shirley Henderson in her best role to date, stepping into the shoes of Kate Linton, a grieving mother looking for solace in her role as a social worker at Alpha House, where Jamie lives. Together, these two women change one another, and it is wonderful to see their relationship blossom. Caton-Jones has created a subtle yet astounding masterpiece, a film that moves with grace and power, a film you won't want to miss

Urban Hymn follows the story of Kate, a social worker who tries to help change the life of Jamie, the troubled teen who has been assigned to her. Finding a connection through singing, Kate is able to help Jamie after she joins her choir. What stood out to me is Isabella Laughland’s portrayal of Jamie’s abusive best friend, Leanne. Laughland has been featured in Harry Potter, Black Mirror, and Now Is Good. Laughland’s performance is so authentic and gut-wrenching, you feel as if you’re truly in the movie yourself. I recommend this coming-of-age film because it is full of soul, bravery, and truth.

Michael Caton-Jones’ coming of age film Urban Hymn is as breathtaking in its story as it is in its presentation. Jones’ features of soul music and EDM parallel the differing aspects of Jamie’s life, from her nostalgic and melancholy memories of her mother to the moments we see her clubbing and drinking with Leann, respectively. Jones’ musical choice placement serves to hint at the overall emotional or mental state the characters become placed in. It’s because of such a well placed and crafted soundtrack that Urban Hymn’s musically influenced plot is able to thrive so seamlessly. I’d suggest seeing Urban Hymn, for a theatrical experience as compelling for the soul as it is true to its tone.
