Naomi Foner's directorial debut, Very Good Girls, explores the complicated dynamics of family and friendship as it tells the story of two best friends who, during their last summer before heading off to college, learn some unexpected lessons about life, love and the true meaning of friendship. In a cozy middle class corner of Brooklyn, Lilly Berger (Dakota Fanning) and Gerri Field (Elizabeth Olsen) embark on their final summer together. Both good girls are inexperienced in life and love but determined that this summer will mark their rite of passage into adulthood. On one sweltering New York city-summer afternoon, the girls challenge each other to a nude swim on a public beach. In the frantic rush away from their adventure and caught up in their own delight, Gerri accidently rides her bike into an artist, David (Boyd Holbrook). This handsome, enigmatic stranger quickly becomes the object of both their affections. Lilly is drawn into a relationship with David and neglects to confide in Gerri, despite her friend's clear interest in him -- and before too long, the secret is set and Lilly is caught between loyalty to her friend and her new found lover. When tragedy strikes Gerri's family, Lilly breaks it off with David, and tries to turn him over to her emotionally devastated best friend. But, David's disappointment at her choice and Gerri's anger when she finds out, leaves Lilly with the very real possibility that she might lose both relationships. How the girls resolve this emotionally charged situation will be a lesson for the rest of their lives, defining love as impossible without truth and the only thing that really sets you free. 2012 VERY GOOD GIRLS, LLC.
