Jaded small-town motel owner Frank Jacobs (Daniel Stern) lives an unhappy life with his unpleasant wife, Helen (Patricia Richardson), and dreams of becoming a country singer. He meets fellow aspiring musician Julie (Lacey Kohl), who is abandoned by her husband, washed-up singer Roy (James Caan). After Frank takes her in, he argues with Helen, who is accidentally shot. Panicking, Frank and Julie bury Helen, and soon are faced with an angry Roy and Helen's suspicious twin sister, Wanda.
