Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play Josh and Cornelia, a married childless New York couple in their mid-forties. As their other friends all start having children, the couple gravitates toward a pair of young hipsters: Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). Soon the older couple begins enjoying the energy they feel hanging out with the younger generation, but eventually Josh begins to suspect his new best friend might not be as straightforward and trustworthy as he thought.

I was initially turned off by the Woody Allen look and feel of this film (though not nearly as turned off as I once was by Allen's Bergman-isms) but this is no cookie-cutter NYC angst and neuroses parade. I really fell for this foursome. The bond they form, despite (or because of) their disparate ages is utterly genuine and unforced. It's youth versus experience, age versus bravado, under-achieving, over-reaching....the story is a fable with a twist, and the director deftly swerves from the usual preachy pitfalls.
