About this movie

Paraiti is a medicine woman. She is the healer and midwife of her rural, tribal people, and she is passionate about protecting life. But new laws are in force prohibiting unlicensed healers. On a rare trip to the city, she is approached by Maraea, the servant of a wealthy woman, Rebecca, who needs her help in order to hide a secret which could destroy Rebecca's position in European settler society. © 2012 South Pacific Pictures Ltd.

Breathtaking and heartbreaking in equal measures. This is a story for women about women. The characters are incredibly far removed from my day to day life so I felt very voyeuristic especially given the nature of the Maori content and mysticism. The overarching themes of race and self hate are universal which anchored my empathy for the characters. Confronting and I feel privileged to have seen it.

An accurate look how cultures into weave into daily routines and how it may broaden each person's view on their life through a different culture
