In 1940 the entire population of Friar, new Hampshire, 572 people, entered a mountain pass together and were never heard from again. Their dogs were tied to posts and left behind to starve. They left without money, tools and even their clothes. A search party, dispatched by the army long after this community mysteriously disappeared, found the remains of some 300, many who had frozen to death. But others had been victims of a slaughter. Half a century later the township has been repopulated but the legend lives on. Was it a government cover up? Or was it a pagan ritual gone horribly wrong?
