In 1897, Winston Churchill (Simon Ward) is a 22-year-old second lieutenant serving as war correspondent in India. Proving himself under fire, Churchill writes, "The River War", a book critical of British General Kitchener (John Mills). An average student with strong innate intelligence and a desire to prove himself to his parents, Churchill soon realizes that a successful Army career could be a springboard into politics. Due to the venereal disease from which he died at forty-six, Churchill's father, Lord Randolph (Robert Shaw), is forced to resign as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Yet, Churchill loved his mother, American-born Lady Jennie (Anne Bancroft), a woman more reserved than affectionate, and whose influence enabled him to join the 21st Lancers. During the Boer War Churchill is given command of a small detachment of soldiers. When captured, he manages to make a daring escape. And it's when he finally ascends to the House of Commons that Churchill is able to defend his father's policies as he advocates neutrality. - 1972, renewed 2000 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.
