About this movie

Winning two awards at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival, Fear Eats the Soul soon delighted audiences all over the world, with its tale of romance and racial prejudice in present-day Munich. Emmi, a widowed cleaning lady in her sixties, meets Ali, a Moroccan immigrant in his thirties. Seeking companionship, the pair marry to the outrage of Emmi’s family, her friends and colleagues. Paying homage to the classic melodramas, Fear Eats the Soul is a beautifully performed look at intolerance and hypocrisy, and a key film for both its director Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the New German Cinema.
