About this movie

Empty Rooms is an award winning film about a house with a horrific secret! Maddie Usher is the single mother of Jonah, a mute autistic boy who can only communicate through imagery. In an effort to change their quality of life, Maddie purchases an old house in the quiet suburbs. Upon moving into the empty Dutch colonial, Jonah's demeanour completely changes. The young boy's behaviour becomes violent and his savant-like skills at drawing reveal a preoccupation with a terrifying form. Jonah's doctor insists it is simply the stress of moving into a new house yet this does little to ease Maddie's worries. Soon Maddie realizes the problem lay not within Jonah, but within the house itself. Empty Rooms is one of the most brilliantly realised horror films of recent years!

A heartbreaking tale with a few decent scares. More of a drama about how a haunted house destroys a family that is hanging together by a thread. This is a interesting little movie which appears to have been made for no money yet the artists involved seem fairly masterful in their craft given the budget. If you are into gore and sensationalism this film is NOT for you. For a horror film I think there are only 2 instances of blood and we are talking about a couple of tea spoons. Empty Rooms eschews many bits of horror film formula. The whole thing felt very 1970s which I'm assuming was intentional. The ghosts are terrifying especially the big scary naked guy. I was genuinely horrified when we first hear his voice calling the lead a c*nt from inside Jonah's bedroom. And then having to see his John Thomas when he first appears... yikes! Never seen ghosts like this before. If mircobudgets and nuance aint your thing you're better off watching Paranormal Whacktivity. Empty Rooms is more like a John Cassavetes horror film than anything coming out of Blumhouse. Watch it for the performances and the retro-tone. 5 stars for managing to do a lot with a little.
