About this movie

A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, MOONLIGHT chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, MOONLIGHT is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Jenkins's staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.

Moonlight; beautiful film. This should be deemed necessary as a statement in today's society as it unpacks such raw and and unspoken themes within the intricacies of African-American culture. Masculinity itself is tackled in this brilliant coming-of-age, following the journey of a boy who defies the social expectations that lie upon him in his world. I tend to find myself crying during most dramas, but Jenkins' approach on such heavy issues almost displays a sense of normalisation on these things. Initially, I considered the film to be quite slow, but as I continued watching, I understood the necessity of depicting each stage in Chiron's growth and how the pace of the film ultimately defines the tone of his life. The characters themselves were played by such an outstanding cast who truly did the story justice. I feel as though Chiron's dramatic change in character between adolescence and adult hood could have been discussed more thoroughly, but rather than that, I found the film's portrayal of such relevant issues quite eye-opening. Good to see this film has received the exposure it deserves.

Another great movie from A24, gets you in the feels and really makes you think sometimes. Abit slow in some parts but it's definitely worth a watch.

This is an incredible movie and very moving. I found the visuals by themselves so powerful they didn't even need the dialogue or music for the story to be understood. Highly recommend!
