It's hard to fathom how this only has 3.5/5 considering some of the dross that has higher ratings. This is an exceptionally clever piece of film-making. It's dark, frightening in parts, wickedly funny and highly unpredictable. When I saw it trailed, I did expect a fairly derivative, mediocre horror, but my friend is a big follower of Jose Whedon and said he always delivers something more edgy or clever, so I watched it on his recommendation. What I experienced was something very unexpected and quite enthralling.

Just feel an overwhelming need to review this, having watched it again last night, to counter the 1 and 2 star reviews. Those people must be either insanely boring or so pretentious life must come across as one endless disappointment after another. If, on the other hand, you have a even a tiny smattering of humour and fun brain cells scattered throughout your brain, I'd strongly recommend this movie. As many have said, it's not a typical slasher. Some have likened it to Scream in it's portrayal of horror but that does it an injustice. It's clever, funny, unusual and unexpected. A refreshing movie which breaks away from the usual tried-and-tested formula. A friend of mine (not a big movie fan who only watches one or two movies a year) saw this and he came out thoroughly buzzing. So to all you one and two star reviewers: I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

This is not an out and out horror movie. If your looking for a brainless slasher flick try elsewhere. But suppose you are open to someone playing around with the horror genre - throw in a bit of humour, some sci-fi a dash of reality tv and a blob of fantasy and you have the Cabin in the Woods. Watch it with an open mind and a pinch of salt and you'll love it - watch it expecting to be scared to death by another murder by numbers horror film and you'll join the hordes of one star reviewers who missed the entire point.
