About this movie

Academy Award® Nominee for best foreign language film. Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Complex, reflective & funny, 'The Square' highlights how we deal with difficult professional and personal decisions and everyday emotions. Christian is clearly thoughtful, but can't seem to identify the right thing to do at first. His impulse is usually wrong, and he later tries to rectify each situation, only to be too late, or not have the right words. It is all too human, all too reflective, and all too real. The story revolves around the staff and halls of a gorgeous museum, and the work that goes into running, promoting, and staging exhibitions. It shines a humorous light on the art world, which is one of the most subtle yet hilarious threads in this film.

It's one of those movies you either love or hate. Years later I still think of it, though. Might as well see for yourself eh?
