About this movie

Gary Faulkner (Nicolas Cage) is a middle-aged man with chronic kidney issues and diabetes living in Colorado and working part-time construction jobs to make ends meet. He is a devout patriot and is outraged at the U.S. Government's inability to track down Osama bin Laden following 9/11. One afternoon while wandering Home Depot and dispensing unsolicited home improvement advice to its customers, Gary runs into Marci Mitchell (Wendi McLendon-Covey), an old high school crush who now works three jobs while raising her niece Lizzie, who is mute and has cerebral palsy. Gary and Lizzie form an unlikely bond, his chattiness nicely complementing her silence. Despite Gary's eccentricities, Marci finds him endearing and the two begin dating. Gary is visited by God (Russell Brand), who tasks him with journeying to Pakistan to capture bin Laden and return him to the United States. Gary decides to oblige, of course, and divulges the plan to Marci. She is cynical at first, but quickly comes to support his plan. Gary's first attempt at his trip ends in a brief sojourn to Mexico. He learns the value of knowing how to operate a sailboat and revaluates his plan. He decides to hang glide into Pakistan instead, buying a sword from the Home Shopping Network for self-protection. He makes it as far as Israel, but a hang-gliding accident lands him in a leg cast. After each of his exploits, Gary returns home to Colorado, Marci, and Lizzie. His life-risking ventures frighten Marci, whose feelings for him grow more intense, and although Gary considers dropping his mission to begin a life with Marci, God appears to him again and insists that he carry on. Gary manages to obtain a visa to travel to Pakistan. He bonds with Islamabad's locals, but finds locating bin Laden more difficult than he had expected. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding with some locals who turn out to be CIA operatives puts Gary on the agency's radar. He is soon detained by two agents who ship him back to America and put him on the no-fly list. He attempts to evade them and loses consciousness, during which time he dreams that he has a climactic sword fight with bin Laden in a cave. He tries to convince the CIA that he has found bin Laden, but they won't hear it and send him back. Not only is Gary greeted by Marci and Lizzie upon his return: word of his mission has gotten out, and a media frenzy ensues. Despite his newfound fame and the growth of his relationship with Marci, Gary insists that he wants to return to Pakistan. As he prepares for his return, it is announced that bin Laden has been killed and Gary is devastated. For a moment, he seems to admit defeat and begins to think about settling down with Marci. However, God appears to him again and convinces him that bin Laden's death has been faked. Marci asks that he gives up the fight and stay with her, but he refuses. However, as he sits on a plane bound for Islamabad, he remembers the love he feels for Marci and Lizzie and returns home, once and for all - for now.
