Affluent teen Ellie and her younger sister appear to live a charmed life, but behind closed doors, she yearns for her busy father's attention, constantly argues with her high-strung mother, and soon finds her world turned upside down after the untimely death of her mother and her father's swift dive into a new relationship with Lena, a kind woman who tries to pull the broken family back together.
