This is no antic-frantic affair; instead, it's a cerebral game of stop-and-go, hide-and-seek, as the director behind the camera handles things exactly like the guy behind the wheel - with a stylish mixture of cold calculation and cool aplomb.
Excellent film. Don't rent this movie if you're expecting the Fast and the Furious, Drive Angry and the like. This is a drama / thriller that expects more from you then breathing. I found it a completely fresh, gritty and dynamic take on organized crime, redemption and the tough guy persona. It takes it's time and doesn't spoon feed you elaborate back stories etc. It's a minimalist approach to character development and I loved it. That said, be warned as the gore is a bit of a shock and some of the most brutal moments I've seen on screen in a while. If this all sounds to slow for you, go rent Hell Rider, I hear it's really good. For those complaining that there's not enough driving, did it occur to you that "Drive" may be a metaphor? Love it or hate it, it's excellent film making. PS Great score.
What a piece of crap!!! If your a pretentious film critic or side with the ramblings of wannabe Indy film producers you will probably reccomend this movie just because it sucks so bad. This is seriously the most akward pointless life wasting movie I have ever seen. I really really want that time back but I can't have it. Thought I'd take a second to help someone not make the same terrible mistake I did.
Not your average idiot car flick Many people expect Drive to be like any number of childish car action movies that have flooded the market over the past 10 years. If that is your expectation, a "2 Fast 4 Furious 8," (crap) then you will be disappointed. Drive is more of a thriller or Michael Mann style crime drama than action movie. Think Mann's "Thief" or "Heat," and mix it with a little David Lynch. Not that there isn't action; the action scenes feel more intense and entrancing because of their stark realism. Overall great movie.
Crap has a new name His name is Drive and he's apparently autistic because the only thing he can do good is drive and like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman he is pretty much retarded at everything else. He doesn't seem to know how or when to talk unless it involves telling others about (wait for it)...driving! When Drive isn't creepily stalking his neighbor or creating uncomfortably long silences he's making sure his joe-cool toothpick is securely in his mouth or safely tucked behind his ear for when he needs to flip out at a moments notice to kill someone...then he walks around the last half of the film covered in blood and no one seems to have a problem with this because we are all so lost in the synthesizer soaked, hipster-chic 80's soundtrack. I litterely laughed out loud more than onelce during this train wreck of a movie...do not subject yourself to this.
Arthouse Hipster garbage This movie was awful. Its not that they advertised it as an action movie. I love any movie with a good plot. But this was horribly done. Every single design choice pulled me out of the movie. The weird editing, the godawful soundtrack, the fact that no one on earth would spend more than 4 minutes around this guy without thinking they were gonna end up a creepy lampshade in his murder basement. Brian Cranston is an amazing actor but I feel he wasted his talent in this awful movie.
It's ok It's too violent for my taste and the few car chases in it were disappointing (yes i realize it's not really a car movie). I just think they could of told the same story or something similar without the graphic violence. I mean look at Vanishing Point that movie is not really about cars either but sort of a character study of one disturbed/flawed man but it's not graphically violent and actually has good car chases as well.
DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!! If I could rate it lower then poor I would. This should be less then half a star! The music was something they pulled out of a 1980s teen girl sound track! This movie is right down there with the movie Wrecked! It was a waste of my money and time!!! Thr main character said a total of 50 words or less! That was awful!
Exceedingly Violent Film Performances overall were riveting, but why the exceedingly graphic violence? Some of the characters in this film get sliced, diced, shot, and stomped on, blood gushing out every which way. I guess there is no other way to show how slime-sucking, low-lives gain revenge when they are wronged. Gosling is a terrific actor; I've been on a Gosling movie-watching tear for the past couple of weeks. He never disappoints.
Who cares if we're there yet, keep drivin'! This movie was incredible. From its rad music soundtrack to its awesome 70s and 80s urban action theme. It single handedly reinvigorates the genre with style and "umph". "Drive" is made like an old muscle car and not today's quickly thrown together action flick that's just as common and weak as a Prius. So, if you like a movie that's built with quality and gets your blood pumped up a few extra R.P.M.s then grab the popcorn and get behind the wheel and...
Snooze fest This film is boredom followed by disgust. If you want a plodding, nonsense of a tale, or if you want a ten minute short film stretched out to two hours, watch this film. If you want meaningless, unbelievable romance, or cheap, unjustified violence sloshed in your face, by all means get this film. Otherwise check out a different flick.
Not great I found myself deceived by this movie. The preview depicted to me that there would be a great deal of car chasing action. There really is about 3 car chases and weak at that. The dialog was severely lacking. I found myself yelling at the screen, "Say something already."
Terrible This movie was hands down one of the worst I ever seen. It was basically done in slow motion with terrible acting and and story that took 2 hours to make any sense. Dont waste your time or money.
Terrible Extremely slow, mediocre driving scenes, crappy ending. For a movie named Drive you'd think it would at least stack up to the likes of Gone in 60 Seconds, Fast and Furious or The Transporter, but despite actually having a good plot the movie was very difficult to sit through. Had they sped it up to fit in 90 minutes it would be ok.
For the person who doesn't need to be spoon fed a clichéd overly obvious plot Sorry for the folks who need clichéd acting, dialogue, and constantly changing erratic stimuli.... But for anyone who can appreciate silence down well and how it forces the viewer to truly take the perspectives of others.... This movie is good... Very good. There is a well crafted atmosphere that is pulsating and visceral. Note it is very violent as the main character is a retires hitman... Something many missed... Immediately assuming he is just a car driver.... This isn't for the ADHD generation.
Finally Best movie I've seen in years. I feel sorry for those of you who did not like this film. It didn't have enough explosions or #$%&ing in it to keep you interested. Go watch Rambo3 and debbie does dallas double feature. And never understand you watched ROXY movie making. It makes you think, but I understand that most people in this world today have drank to much flouride to care. Also the soundtrack was brilliant and transports you to another level of emotion. To bad only 5stars here, cause this one goes to11
awesome! I expected a mindless action film but I was wrong. This movie focuses on the internal things that Driver has to deal with, not the action. I love how we see car scenes from his point of view instead of from the outside. This movie is so clever and unlike the typical Hollywood movies we see today. Goslin is an amazing actor! If you have the attention span of a 12 year old, don't watch this but if you are open minded and mature, give it a try. Its really creative and interesting.
TERRIBLE, Suck, stinks, BAD, boring too! This movie Sucks. A lot of violence, blood, guts. One car chase. Almost no diaglog. Nothing witty. SKIP IT. Ryan Gosling may be a very good actor, but this movie ... NOT!
Very dissapoonting It had the potential to be a great thriller/noir/heist movie but it was poorly executed. The opening chase scene was great and intense and edge of your seat but that's where the good stops. There's no real acting, scenes are seriously dragged out and contain no dialogue. The main character is boring and offers nothing to the movie. The villains are way more interesting and I cared more about what happened to them than I did the protagonist. Artsy is fine if done right but this was just a boring movie
Stupid and boring! Ryan Gosling is a good actor but this movie was not for him! I do have to admit it was a great story however. The movie itself was boring and a waste of time. Not enough action for him to be playing a gateway driver. It was more of a love story! 2 out of 5 for me and that's only because of the story line.
Boring No action. No driving. No dialogue. Characters are painfully awkward around each other. Also people that like this movie are extremely obnoxious elitists. It doesn't make you cool or mean you're smart if you like an artsy movie. You guys all come off pretty dumb.
Real customer review, not a robot review... Apparently my previous review stating that most of the 5 star ratings were spam by the studio was not a hit...as it was removed. RedBox, where real people rate movies give Drive a 1-2 star average. Android Market, where robots rate movie=4-5 star rating. You draw your own conclusion. Oh, and this movie was HORRIBLE. It wasn't "sophisticated" or "intellectual"...it was poorly directed and boring.
One of 2011's best!! As many have already pointed out, the trailer makes this movie seem as if there would be more driving scenes. However, it did not dissapoint. Sure, the story seemed a little slow at times but the characters were phenomenally well-developed, the acting is superb, and the story and screen-play are brilliant. A must watch for those who don't judge a movie according to the number of explosion scenes. BEWARE: the soundtrack will get stuck in your head!
False advertising Definitely slow and the writers seemed to limit themselves to 100 words or less in the script. Brian Cranston was the only actor with any lines. If you had met the Ryan Goselin character and he stared at you while saying only 2 or 3 words every 5 minutes, you'd probably distance yourself immediately.
Not so hot The previews made this movie seem to be something different than the actual movie was. I WA looking forward to this movie for months and when I fondly got to see it. I was severely disappointed
Good movie... bad purchase I bought this movie and got a refund because it won't let me play in HD on my computer. Yes, I bought the HD version of the movie. Costs the same as a blu ray disc with digital copy included, so not very competitive in pricing, either. Don't think I'll be buying movies from Play store anymore.
This movie should be called "Parked" This movie started off great. Action packed and suspense, exactly what you would expect from a movie titled "Drive". After the first 15 mins this movie rapidly declined! It began to movie very slowly from scene to scene and the plot became progressively worst and predictable. If you are not looking for an action packed thriller then this movie may be worth watching. But if you think this movie will keep your heart pounding like sitting behind a 500 horse power engine then you may want to keep browsing.
idiots. Stop being idiots. I'm not rating the movie. The movie was freaking amazing. I'm rating you stupid idiots giving stupid "movie was boring" reviews because you're all too dumb to recognize a good film when you see one.
Poor Direction Aside from the inappropriate use of 90's style music, the movie was slow and poorly done. The plot was decent but the execution was lacking. Dialogue was limited but not in an artistic or dramatic fashion. The character development was not as good as it could have been and spread thin across the film. Watch something else.
Good movie but not for the simple Reading the reviews I can see how simple minded and dumb most of society is. It was good. Made you pay attention. Made you grow to like the main character because of the horrible stuff he did for a lady and her kid whom he just met.
It amazing how much you can tell about a movie by reading reviews All in all it was a great movie. I decided I was gonna like it before seeing it after reading the mixed reviews. I didn't see it and yet I knew it would be good after reading thie dislikes and realizing that everyone who didn't like the movie were generally dumber than those that did enjoy it. In closing I'll say this... If you are not particularly bright, avoid this movie at all costs. There are quiet parts in the movie that will upset you and send you into a drooling fit of anger.
I want my lost time back This movie would have been better if it was a PowerPoint presentation on a timer with music in the background. The extended scenes with no dialogue and hungry stares did nothing to build the story. It seemed like the movie was advertised as a more action oriented flick, but it wasn't at all. Maybe the book is better. I've never read it, but assume it didn't translate well to the big screen.
Not worth watching! It was very artistically shot and had a great soundtrack but the actual movie is lame, nothing happens and it ends on a very flat note, leaving you feeling cheated, I watched it in theatres when it came out and it was the worst movie I have ever seen in theatres. Also the car he drives is stupid. You can not get a new impala with a manual trans. FAIL!
