Roderick L. Barnes, Sr. It has become vogue to say negative things about Mr. Cruise. And it is fashionable to sound erudite while denigrating cinema that is remarkably good. (En passant, I am not a fan of Tom Cruise on a personal level. His beliefs bother me. But his acting is exemplary.) The movie is a fine contribution to modern science fiction. It is futuristic and has a message. Characters develop as we are drawn in to thinking about the ease with which even well-meaning people are manipulated. People are more than the some of their organic parts - the spirit of people is intimated and even shown relevant. Morgan and Tom are not going to win awards for their work in this movie. But I will escape into this though-provoking piece again and again. If there are any complaints from this reviewer they are as follows: 1) In the sequence where we are shown what happened to the original crew it can have been made clearer that we are seeing memories narrated by the flight recorder. 2) In the trip to meet the Tet it could have been further explained why the all-knowing machine was not able to discern that the other occupant was an old black man and not a young russian woman. Wait until it's free on Hulu or something Boring is the first adjective that comes to mind when I go to describe this. It was also a little confusing but not in a fun "Matrix" let's figure this out kind of way. I literally rolled my eyes when they revealed what was going on, very slow build up for a not particularly surprising conclusion. I actually rolled my eyes at most of the "surprises" as they were sooooo easy to guess and/or not that exciting. There was actually only one reveal that made me do a double take, but it didn't lead anywhere interesting. This probably is only popular because of Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise; however, no amount of good acting could make this lame movie worth paying for in my opinion. I truly suggest spending your money on another rental or some munchies.
Don't let RottenTomatoes fool you This movie is superb. However, its trailer does not do it justice, because to do it justice visually would be to spoil the plot. However, I believe that by discussing how it deviates from the standard of its genre, I can do it non-spoiler-y justice. If you are looking for a shoot-em-up, action-y sci-fi film, look elsewhere. This may be what turns many of its detractors against Oblivion. The film is, instead, a superb _post-apocalyptic_ sci-fi film, with themes of perseverence and rebuilding in the wake of apocalypse running through it. The vast majority of bullets fired in action sequences are from automated turrets, and there are only 7 or 8 speaking parts, but I contend that this movie shows more of humanity that The Matrix, Die Hard, and Independence Day combined - with a fraction of the cast of each. Put it this way - if they offered a rental version, I would expect that 50% of people who rented it would turn around and buy it for the higher price once the credits started rolling. I don't know what Rotten Tomatoes was smoking when they gave it a score under 80 - this is a great movie.
Let me explain Cant STAND Tom Cruise! But.. I cant lie, he's good and I hate it. This Movie blew me away. The twists seemed to come straight out of one of my Coma Nightmares, and those were bad/BadAss. A director could make some serious cash off any one of my coma nightmares. This movie caught one almost verbatim. Takes an intelligent eye, Def worth the rental
So far one of the better Science Fiction Films this year! I've tired of people saying the movie copied this and copied that. All movies copy something from each other and what made this movie enjoyable was that the pieces fit well into the story. I must commend the director Joseph Kosinski and his editor. They did a marvelous job of movie pacing. There are slow cerebral moments and then high paced action sequences and never once did I feel the story dragged down or got slow. For a year of multiple science fiction movies from "Into the Darkness", "Pacific Rim", "After Earth", "Robot and Frank", and my much anticipated movie "Elysium", (There are others but these are what I've seen so far) I'd say this Oblivion so far is my favorite Sci-Fi movie this year. I'm sure that "Elysium" will top that. Definitely worth you time to watch and enjoy
Felt like an oldie but goody Often I feel like people expect too much from a movie, like every new thing is supposed to completely blow you away or otherwise its not worth anything, which absolutely is not true. While not the most incredible thing ever like some people think it was supposed to be, Oblivion was a solid sci-fi movie throughout. I'm not going to try to argue with the naysayers because that pretty hard, all I am going to say is that I personally enjoyed it. It gave me a sense of nostalgia in that it has some sort of indistinct feeling that I've sorta seen it before, and I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean it in a good way. It felt like a classic old sci-fi movie, nothing specific really, just kind of that "feeling", ya know? Well thats my maybe more than two bits, but that's what I have to say.
Worth a go. I really liked this film. I'm probably biased being a sci-fi buff. I don't get why this film didn't better reviews. I think it has something to do with people being too bigoted to see passed Cruises religious views. The only question I have is, does Hollywood know that Morgan Freeman and Sam Jackson aren't the only black actors in the world? Come on and branch out a bit folks. Charles Dutton would have nailed this role, just saying.
Good film, sleeper hit Oblivion came and went without much fanfare as far as I can remember with Edge of Tomorrow being the other Tom Cruise sci fi film getting more recognition. This is a shame because Oblivion is a good film as well in my opinion. It's a film that takes time to build up like a mystery novel. Establishing a lore but then leaving clues to show that all isn't what it seems. When the truth is finally revealed, it's brings the story together showing a lot more depth and leaving the viewer with more questions in a good way? I have to disagree with a lot of the unfavorable reviews. Oblivion is a film that's shot well, has good casting, a good memorable soundtrack, a good fairly original story (by today's standards) and good effects. It's an original film at a time when original films are lacking but desperately needed in Hollywood.
Extremely boring! I always had bad troubles falling asleep since when i was born! I kept rolling over and over in my bed every night and i tried any kind of medication, herb and stuff! Finally i found the cure!!! After 30 minutes of this crap i passed out!!! Very recommended if you suffer of the same syndrome! If you want to watch a real movie don't waste your time.2 stars for the special effects and the sfx.
I don't know what people were watching... This is a good movie. Simple truth. The plot, while not all that original, was good despite the uneducated bad reviews. Do you like Westside Story? Same plot as Romeo and Juliet. Doesn't make Westside Story a bad movie/musical. In fact, it's very good. Similarly, Oblivion picks pieces from other scifi plots and scenarios (Independence Day and Moon to name a couple), and turns it into its own. It's no Book of Eli as far as plot twists, but it works and there is certainly unexpected discovery along the way. The visuals are stunning and the sound is perfection (I recommend watching in surround sound). Don't listen to the nay-sayers. They just don't like Tom Cruise or something.
Oblivion Tom Cruise at his typical self centered "ooo, ooo look at me mommy! I'm acting!!! Neat-o huh?"kind of way. I mean this guy really shovels it at you in this one.Of all the film's I have seen him in right from Legend to Risky Business right through until this kind of detect it all crap before the end of the movie is just a lame duck in my pond!
Very good movie. There are really only two negatives that especially stand out. First, is the premise (haha!). But, there's actually a reason behind the problem with it. So, it's acceptable. Second, is the issue with the moon. Within seconds of the start, we find the moon has been broken up and caused bad stuff to happen on Earth. Well, before spending billions of dollars on special effects, actors' salaries, and filming, someone should have looked up the concept of center of mass. So, science-wise, that's pretty bad. But, plot-wise, it's fairly insignificant. So, overall, I'm happy with the movie. It rises far above most other science fiction movies.
Rent don't buy. 2.5 stars The acting is pretty bad especially from Cruise who doesn't develop any rapport with either of his two love interests. Morgan Freeman is in for 5 minutes, and the story which has so much cool potential from an apocalyptic view, just gets developed quite poorly by Kosinski. However, the visuals were well done as were the special effects. The story falls a little short and ends up with another cheesy ending. Apocalypse fans can add a 1/2 star. Definitely not a classic.
Excellent Sci-fi Movie! The movie gets off to the slow start, establishing the setting and characters, but once it picks up it becomes tense and maintains this tension throughout. The plot was surprisingly not very predictable. I expected a formulaic sci-fi flic and would have been okay with that, but some of my predictions actually fell short, which is a rarity in many genres today. The acting was spot on, but with a cast like this, I'd have been surprised at anything less. The only problem was the length. The setting really deserved a closer look, as did the events leading up to it.
This movie is for adults kid I've seen many of people give this movie a bad rating and thought I might be a little to generous with my rating. But the I looked at the people giving the bad ratings and found that they spend most of their time rating comic books and watching cartoons. Maybe you should grow up before you watch this movie, or porn for that matter, since hairy vaginas might make you puke little boys. But I'm guessing porn is the only way you'll ever see one anyway. Say hi to your mom for me.
Slow, Predictable Too Predictable, slow and boring in general. This is one of those hashed out we gotta deliver a Sci-fi movie this weekend let's put Tom Cruise in it kind of deals. Forced love story. Bad science fiction.
Terrible What does it take for a movie to get a rating lower the 3.5 on Google Play? I don't think i've ever see that happen. This movie is terrible. Visually it's interesting, but everything else is horrible. People, please, let's take these ratings more seriously. If 5 starts is the highest rating anything near that should be an amazing movie........this.doesnt deserve to be ANYWHERE near that.
Are You a Great Team? I was struck by the asymmetry between the team members. She totally adores him with decorum, he highly respects her with some affection. Watch their irises. DISBELIEF every time I saw the playhouse backdrop, instead of a shattered moon, in the sky. BAD PHYSICS: The vector-of-thrust misses the center-of-mass on both 'copter and weapon pods. The means of roll, pitch, yaw, and acceleration are often magical instead of explicit. This should reduce my total score below 4 points.
All around great movie Fantastic special effects and sound track. Sound effects were great, as well. Cruise and Freeman pull off their roles and these two have an awkward chemistry that comes together at the end. If you're bored, you're not paying attention. This movie is not for those with short attention spans that require a movie to walk them through the plot and supply nonstop gratuitous violence and sex. There is just enough of all of that with some twists and turns that keep you enthralled. Best SciFi movie of 2013, easily
Why is the audio only available in stereo? What is this 1993 Google? Any movie released should be available in at least 5.1 surround. I was shocked when I purchased the HD version of this movie only to see it has a 2.0 stereo only soundtrack. What a let down.
Live and learn I loooove sci-fi and this flick is pretty cool... Even though it ends up ripping off 2001 space odyssey towards the end. What I'm trying to say is that I should have rented on redbox before buying on impulse from Costco.
Meh. For a post apocalypse with all the trimmings it should have been better. Twist at end? Really? They should have put it up front. Should have blow bucks to show the war. Hated only left overs... movie felt like a left over.
I had my doubts about this film, especially after seeing and hearing negative things from others. Hubby watched it, and told me it was an enjoyable sci-fi flick. He and I have similar tastes, so I went ahead and rented this. It is a very entertaining movie. I don't understand so many people disliking it. It is clear that the creators borrowed from other science fiction stories, but they did it in a clever way and made something original. It isn't one of the best films of the genre, but it's worth watching.
Sucked The CGI was the best part. T.C. acting was bland and emotionless. The storyline has been done before "Moon". The ending was overly predictable. I give it two stars because Morgan Freeman. I'd ask for my money back, but I don't think the movie made any.
This is what sci-fi is supposed to look like. Wasn't interested in seeing this in the theatre, as I generally dislike Tom Cruise movies, and figured this was just another Top Gun, action adventure, love story flick. I was dead wrong. This movie meets the expectation of this Sci-fi geek. Trust me, it'll meet yours. Rates up there with the best of Star Trek, Battlstar Galactica, and reminds me of Tron with a epic arc like Star Wars and the Matrix. Can you tell I liked this movie? Rent it.
Sluggish experience Watched Cruise in Live, Die, Repeat, liked it but I missed this one. I expected it to be better even though it's an older movie. The plot comes to a stand still at several points making for a sluggish, boring experience.
One huge, ripe pile of hero goop - but still very entertaining This might be a first - a movie hero who defies death, the machine hostile takeover (after The Matrix, who needs convincing this is going to happen at some point?), gets to be the hero-martyr, wins the war AND returns - nope, not from the dead, but better! from mass production in a machine genome project to lead his people to safety and reunite with his leading woman. Well, I was entertained, so there. Cruise and Morgan pulled it off.
Well written & directed Too many action movies these days have the shaking cameras, jumping around in action/fight scenes so much you can't even see or understand what's going on, I hate that and will turn away or fast forward thru it. It was so refreshing to not have to deal with that here. The story is not entirely original but well written and carried out well enough to not be predictable. REALLY enjoyed it and will watch it again
Brilliant Sci Fi for the Thinking Person Wonderful film based on a brilliant graphic novel. Unique in the genre, plausible in a Sci Fi way and a real twist at the end. Cruise was born for roles like these and I applaud him for digging into the character and making him real. Freeman brings a certain gravitas that only he can. And the production values of this masterpiece are off the charts. If you're sick of the mindless shoot 'em ups that have come to dominate (ruin) modern Sci Fi then this film is for you.
I really liked it A lot of people had all sorts of crazy accusations about Tom's acting and what not... How about this, relax. Enjoy the movie, what an amazing story. What a beautiful way to realize just what we miss every day, walking by nature, meanwhile watching badass fight scenes with robots, crazy flight machines, naked redheads, and Tom Cruise. Relax! It was if nothing, worth watching twice and I've a photographic memory... nothing irks me more than watching something I've already seen.
Rent or Skip I can't believe this currently has a rating of 4.4 currently. It is one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a while. Comparable with visual stunning movies like Prometheus, A 2001 Space Odyssey, and Avatar. But thats where the substance ends. The acting is completely dry. The script is so cookie cut as can be, you can see what is going to happen within 15 mins of the film. It's just an overall lackluster boring film
Not bad, not great. In a world where everything looks like an apple product, retro '80's cinematography meets updated mid-century esthetics and then explosions. Lots of explosions. There is something camp about this movie, not that that's a bad thing. My main beef is that the female leads were horrible, stiff, and posed in every shot like catalog models. But I still enjoyed it. Above average for recent sci fi.
People need to stop hating on Cruise films So Ok, you don't care for Tom's crazy religious history or past actions. He is a good actor though, and he's put out some solid movies. This is one of them. We get it, it didn't surprise you that much. Every movie doesn't have to be at the same complexity level as the Lost tv series to be good, get over it. Solid story, solid acting, awesome affects. It was a good film if not a great one.
Rotten tomato is rotten This is a great movie for those who enjoy action adventure genre. I think it's probably those hater ruining the rating. If you are not biased about Tom Cruise, you should watch this movie. If you don't like Tom Cruise, don't bother.
