About this movie

After the death of his wife, Carson Drew decides to leave Chicago behind and make a fresh start with his daughter in River Heights. But for 16-year-old Nancy Drew, life in a small town is mighty dull. She longs for excitement, adventure, and the chance to make a difference. Nancy gets that opportunity when she is asked to help solve the ghostly activity at the Twin Elms mansion. Can she help explain the creaking footsteps, exploding lightbulbs and the ominous creature? Is it the handiwork of high-school bully Derek Barnes? Or is it possible that the ghost of original owner Malcolm Colfax is back for revenge? Recruiting her best friends George and Bess, along with local “mean girl” Helen, Nancy is determined to solve the mystery! Join Sophia Lillis (Stephen King’s It) as Nancy in this thrilling mystery that will keep you guessing till the very end!

It is a nice up-to-date take on the original story, with appropriate addition of modern technology and social trends. I do like Nancy being spunky, but I think she doesn't have to keep breaking the laws while trying to solve the case, like picking locks, and Bess pretending to be someone whom she isn't to get the facts out of unsuspecting people. This is kind of like Harry Potter series that downplayed the intelligence and courage of the adult characters, just to make the teens look better, but that is not the right or just way. And I don't like how the first soundtrack keep hyping about More Than Being a Girl. Whether you are being a girl, a boy, besides physical attributes, either can be smart, or less smart. So by repeating "I am more than being a girl", it is like over compensation for lack of true self-confidence of being who one is, whether girl or boy; I do appreciate how Helen gets to stop relying on falling back on expected social norms for a "rich and beautiful" popular girl, but I don't see why Nancy couldn't start polishing her nails. I am female, but I don't need to stress or overstress that, to be who I truly am, or who I can choose to be.
