CITIZENFOUR is a real life thriller, unfolding by the minute, giving unprecedented access to Edward Snowden as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the NSA.
Poitras' movie works even better as a horror picture -- perfect for Halloween week.
This thoughtful film is designed with taste.
The message of the movie is as clear as Siberian ice: Whether you're a Tea Partier, an Occupier or just an ordinary Joe, you might be the next citizen who's stranded in limbo.
Filmmaker Laura Poitras paints a frankly terrifying picture of the loss of liberty involved in the widespread government gathering of the communication done by ordinary Joes on a daily basis.
Citizenfour argues that when we lose our personal privacy, we also lose our liberty, because fear overcomes our freedom of speech.
Citizenfour plays like a thriller as it chronicles a complex and vitally important chapter in our history.
Poitras' movie works even better as a horror picture -- perfect for Halloween week.
I'll tell u who real hero is! Did he read all thousands of pages of what he leaked? No. The real hero is my twin working in military intelligence in south Korea (soon to be promoted/moved to Georgia). He can claim free speech all he wants, but to work where she does/where she did/anything related to national security u sign away ur free speech rights regarding various components of ur job. If this happened pre-obama the Republicans wud have been in an uproar like the non-scandal of Benghazi! People like my sister are the heroes, not this little egotistical narcissistic coward. If he loves his country n constitution so much come back for a trial! Learn the names of the men and women u leaked and apologize for almost getting them killed, the NSA found what it shud apologized for, did so, now its ur turn u little narcissist.
A must watch! The reviews that say he's egotistical and a narcissist obviously haven't even watched this and are just spouting more government rhetoric. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the like were all considered traitors, but did great things for this nation. Politicians who say their job is to protect Americans lives are flat wrong. Their job is to protect AMERICA! Its ideals, it's constitution AND its people. Edward Snowden is the hero that exposed them and their betrayals of all of us.
The real traitor The real traitor here is the NSA and the American government. If they hadn't lied and spy'd on us in the first place then there would have been no need for all of this. America is nothing but a giant stinking pot of hypocrisy these days anyways. Land of the free is nothing but a joke any more get real people.
Chilling Everyone who wants to live in a free world needs to watch this and take action against their criminal governments, who disregard their constitution grossly. Thank you Ed Snowden; we need more true patriots like you!
Being a hero is not obedience The United States was founded by people who saw wrongs and revolted against the British government and it's laws. George Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and others were "traitors" of their day, with many in the colonies being loyal to the crown. Fast forward to present, and we have Edward Snowden, who gave up his own freedom, a good paying job and his family to show how the United States government is breaking the law. In Rome, the question was "who watches the watchers"? Government has to have extreme accountability, because it has extra powers...if it does not, it threatens our liberties. This documentary helps to show that.
This is an important documentary. Snowden is one of my heroes, I think everyone needs to see this. I wish I could shake his hand, because he did something amazing. He saw something really wrong, and instead of ignoring it, he did something. If more people would just open their mouths and say-"that's wrong", I think it'd help everyone, I hope he can come home someday soon without being prosecuted and scapegoated. This is a film that will show you what happened from Snowden perspective . I believe him
Our government broke laws... Our government broke laws in order to protect their definition of what they think your level of freedom should be. Snowden broke silence to protect our civil rights under the umbrella of what can happen when government definitions get skewed. Are we free? Is the freedom of the public compromised when public interests and government interests collide? Next time you threaten the pocket book of a government agency, ask yourself who's monitoring them monitoring you?
Citizen 4 Documentary about how corrupt the American government is! Edward Snowden should be classified a hero! Our crappy government wants to take away all of our civil liberties. Snowden just outed the corrupt agencies seizing private information illegally! If I can't speak to my own attorney privately on the phone.....what rights do I have!.......None if the U.S. government has there way! They use this info they have no right to.. to terrorize & manipulate people into doing anything they want out of fear.....
A patriot like elsberg This guy will be vindicated soon, don't let the main stream media fool you, Snowden is an American patriot and I'm a veteran, you wanna thank me for my service? Stop sending my brothers and sisters in arms to these nonsense wars, and vote on stopping this police military state were living in!
Great for snowden Snowden hands down is a hero. People in today's society tho DONT really need this movie. USA in itself is a dysfunction and is ran and founded by scum. Even if snowden revealed this what makes you think they still DONT watch you the sad thing is there's no trust in this country and people that create the purge movies or rampage just makes society more hateful. People act as if electing trump was better.but look at it he has 0 government experience. Clinton wouldn't of been better. This movie is great
Movie Review Please This is a place for a movie review not political commentary on the person the movie is about. The reviews here requesting Snowdon's death are creepy and clearly posted by people with serious issues and a deep authoritarian issues\addiction. It was a very well done movie that had a good pace.
A traitor to those who look at the small things and not the big picture A hero to most people and cause for the federal court to make it illegal to collect information any longer. Yet somehow still a traitor because he skimmed past a few things in all of what he exposed. He risked his life, his family and friends lives and lost the country he exposed to be spying on every single US citizen and storing that information to be kept indefinitely. All under the noses of those in office and those that call this country home. A documentary that plays like a real suspense feature film
I do not understand the one stars for this movie. Snowden did an amazing thing for the Americans by helping prevent internal spying and promoting net neutrality. This is something that should be ignored, simply because if we ignore it now it will simply get worse.
YOUR A HERO ED! I HOPE TO HELP WHAT YOU HAVE STARTED This man is a hero, those who disagree don't understand the reality of technology and what it is capable of! I take it most who disagree only listen to what they (news) "tells" you. MUCH LOVE ED! THANK YOU BROTHER!
Gripping. Very few movies have had my undivided attention like this one did. It grabs you early and doesn't give you time to become uninterested. Two hours flew by and left me wanting more. Great film.
I can't believe anyone could or would say there is no corruption in government. I wish we'd come up with a kinder word than, "whistleblower." I wish we wouldn't jump to conclusions about people doing what often needs to be done. This was a special and good movie.
Fantastic! I feel the strong emotion radiating from each person while watching this in depth documentary. Edward snowden considered a "whistleblower" is on a mission to inform America about the NSAs dark secrets while trying to survive long enough for him to become relevant. Ed puts his life at risk to show the American people these secrets while carefully and strategically fleeing from the country so he can continue on his mission to spread word to the world. Simply Amazing. 10/10
Kaitlyn Lathrop, Edward has been trying to come back to the states since 2014 when his girlfriend moved to russia to live with him, the NSA's head department leader won't approve of his pardon, neither will the CIA, or our president. As soon as edward snowden moved to russia his passports were cancelled so he has absolutely no way back unless our president approves of his pardon and a fair trial.
Story of an American Hero Does a great job of highlighting the abuse of government power, and the expansion of it during the Bush and Obama presidencies. All Americans should watch this to be better informed on the issue of privacy versus security.
This is the rest of the story. Forget what you've heard in the media. Watch this documentary. It follows the release of the leaks in real time and shows the genuine care and core beliefs behind the actions of Contractor Edward Snowden, a man history will vindicate regardless of his current status.
Intimate look at Ed Snowden in 2015 Best Documentary Well deserved winner of *2015 Oscar for Best Documentary*! An *intimate* look at the modern surveillance state and those that dare to oppose it. It had me on the edge of my seat more than any Hollywood thriller!
