About this movie

A fresh take on the coming-of-age story, this surreal tale follows the artistically driven Oscar (AMERICAN CRIME’s Connor Jessup) hovering on the brink of adulthood. Struggling to find his place in the world after a rough childhood and haunted by images of a tragic incident, Oscar dreams of escaping his small town. After he meets a mysterious and attractive new co-worker, Oscar follows the guidance of his pet hamster Buffy (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) and faces his demons to find the life he wants.

Exactly everything I have been searching from the gay movie genre. This may be the only movie in which the gay lead ends his story arc empowered. Tragedy is currently the unimaginative and completely predictable worn-out default arc of any onscreen gay character. Writer and director Stephen Dunn never allows his protagonist to succumb to tragedy after numerous opportunities which continuously surprises his audience and keeps them guessing at every turning point. I'm filled with joy knowing that the young guys coming out now have this uplifting movie to watch, one that never denies the struggles and refrains from preaching. This movie signals that the gay community has turned the corner and no longer walks the path of victims. The last spoken words and visuals of the movie give the young men of today permission to write their own story. "It's time for you to start making your own dreams. You can have anything you want in this world..." Highlighted with the sound of a balloon pop, which echos the opening scene where the protagonist asks for a dream followed by sound of a deflating balloon. Maked room in my top ten favorite movies for this hidden jem.

This movie is more than incredible! This work of art takes you on an astounding journey as we follow Oscar slowing dealing with the skeletons in his closet (pun intended). This film addresses some very intense themes in a very grown-up way. Not only did this keep me utterly entranced, it made me think, and sometimes that's the most important thing. The romance and friendship make you feel every drop of joy and every stab of pain. I have no idea how but this movie contains more emotions than I ever though possible. I would recommend this movie to everyone, it was jaw dropping amazing.
