About this show

Based on the DC Comics character, John Constantine is a man waging war against the forces of darkness. An irreverent con-man and occult expert, he doesn’t come down on the side of either good or evil … but ultimately might be the only thing defending us against the dark forces from beyond.

The show took time to become the Hellblazer series it wanted to be, but when it did it was dark, creepy, full of dramatic consequences, and just very entertaining. Matt Ryan's performance epitomizes John Constantine, and I can't imagine anyone playing the character better. Unfortunately, certain things held it back: failure to be dark and gritty in early episodes, shoehorned romantic and sexual tension, and unwillingness to explore the deep lore of Constantine and his part of the DC universe. Good though.

I'm one of the few apparently that like Keanu Reeves's film version of Constantine (Matrix esque) better than this version; fans like that is said to be more faithful to the comic. The Reeves version is stylish. Matt Ryan reminds me of Gordon Ramsay if he wasn't a world class chef; he'd probably be a supernatural cult expert. Tattoos; reciting spells. The other two people seem like afterthoughts. Unless it's an episode that involves one of them specifically; you forget they're even on the show.

I'm a huge fan of hellblazer, and while cable requires some watering down off Vertigo's gold son, this still showed his core. The pilot was "eh" but the running show was just about perfect. Matt Ryan did our boy justice and finally gave him the RIGHT voice. I'm still campaigning for it. And probably will for along while. This is worth every. Single. Cent.
