I just finished watching Season 1 of this surprisingly good series. It starts off quickly (reminiscent of the opening of Pitch Black) and throws you into a proper science fiction universe complete with warring corporations, androids, FTL and secret military research. The characters, despite their names (One, Two, Three, etc.), are each unique and memorable. In some ways they remind me of the crew of Serenity. I found myself comparing them to Jayne or Mal or River. It's also a fun romp. It has some darker moments but remains playful without being campy. With so many somber shows today with Bruce Wayne levels of dark angst and soul-crushing backstories, it's refreshing to have the "I'll be in my bunk" moments. This is not to say the series was flawless. There are some stock characters and setups that have been seen a thousand times in Star Trek, BSG, Firefly, etc.. For example, the socially dysfunctional android who yearns to be human is standard fare and difficult to pull off in this day when even our phones have nuanced speech.

Unique in many ways, but also various similarities to other productions within the genre. The initial mystery of their identities and how they arrived at their situation, compounded by the absence (Black Hole) of information that would lead to anything other than more questions and mysteries, tended to keep ones interest perked. And even if you grew a little weary towards the end of the 1st season, the jaw dropping betrayal in the last episode would drive almost anyone to look for the nxt seasn.

I'll give it 4, but its really more like 3.75. Slowly getting better and deeper, but its like getting a report card full of C's and B's. It passes, but at any moment it could fail...or become something worthy of A's. Its better than Season 1 of STNG...and its outclassed by Killjoys on the same channel/same night. Still, as the show progresses and the characters get fleshed out to where they aren't cardboard archtypes and the writers get a feel for the show it does get better. Or at least it doesn't make you want to stop watching.
