I have read some of the reviews raving about the latest doctor and series 7. i wonder if we are watching the same show. It seems that stories with loads of flash effects but terrible acting and plots that make no sense appeal to this younger generation, but watching the other tripe on TV like X factor, Britain has no talent, I'm a celebrity etc and terrible soaps make it no surprise. If you go back to troughton, perwtee and Tom Baker the sets may have been cheap but the drama was great, the stories fantastic. More recently Eccleston was fabulous and David Tennant up until the last few stories that began to make no sense...simply doing fantastical things for no reason does not make a drama!! Russell T Davies was a clever man and knew enough of the old series to mix it with the new and it worked. Moffat seems to be an idiot and he could do well to look back at in particular the Troughton era with Capaldi taking over as an older doctor. I cannot see this series continuing as it stands with the tripe that is being written, a great shame but unless there are some solid stories that get the original fans and families together again on the sofa it will die a death once again!

There's a lot of whining going on in the comments, most from fools who don't understand how nostalgia works. However, some critics have points worth reading. The cost is too high considering we UK license fee payers already funded it's creation. I waited ages for season 8 on Netflix and other services, but to no avail. So I finally plumped for paying 30 pounds. The actor ranges all over the place as different writers try to find different aspects of the character that have appealed over the years. It gets messy, but it never gets bad. This makes it the best of the BBC's recurring content. I personally like the big, grandeur filled stories such as the pandoracon or the crucible, that tickle the edges of each episode contrasted with the single vignettes of cushion hugging terror. Silly things like sentient balls of fat or farting rubber aliens can just be glossed over, so long as there are not too many. I know some people like them and they have their place in the Doctor's repertoire. It would be nice if we could see the Doctor team up with a companion that isn't a young hot woman for a season if only to avoid the lazy sexual tension motif that keeps creeping in. Fingers crossed.

Every doctor should be taken on his own merits. Peter Capaldi is not perfect but this last series has allowed him to lead as the doctor. Whilst Clara was around the Doctor was the assistant and even Matt Smith suffered. I like PC and am sorry to see that his last series was the first one where he was allowed to shine. His age and sex do not detract him from the role and allow him to be the Doctor instead of a boyfriend doctor. This series brings Bill and Nardole into the mix. Bill is an interesting character, but the episode reminders that she is lesbian does detract from developing her character. As such she's 2-dimensional and wooden. With a constant look of semi-surprise on her face makes her unbelievable as a companion. On the spin I do like Nardole. His confidence with who he is and his poor attempts at keeping the Doctor in check gives him a more believable character and adds humour to the environment. The writing isn't bad. Steven Moffat appears to enjoy a sense of power over his audience. As the target audience is meant to be 8/9 year olds if I were him I wouldn't brag so much. The storyline through the series is good but not so strong as to impact the goal of each episode which ought to stand alone. Overall the series is good and I would like PC to have more of a chance to show his skills in the role.
