Lucy Knight, a third year medical student, begins her first day in the ER. Although she impresses doctors with her ability to answer medical questions, her attempts to help patients are clumsy. Placed on probation, Ross must report every procedure he needs to perform to Weaver. Meanwhile, a paramedic asks Greene to consider acting as the district medical director for EMS (Emergency Medical Service), a voluntary job. Greene's daughter, Rachel, is living with him for the summer. Corday searches for a new fellowship so she can remain in the United States.

To save rent money, Carter lives in a medical student dormitory as a resident advisor. While visiting Corday at her apartment, Benton meets her father. Corday realizes that the only way she can stay at County General is to start over as an intern, which she eventually decides to do. The audiology test on Reese reveals a severe to profound hearing loss. He'll need digital hearing aids. A child dies after not receiving proper treatment at the scene of a karate accident, prompting Greene to become an unpaid EMS director. Hathaway hires a salaried registered nurse for her clinic.

Greene agrees to serve on the search committee to consider candidates to permanently fill the interim position as chief of emergency medicine. Despite Weaver's objections, Ross gets the job as the new pediatric emergency room attending doctor. Greene treats a constipated horse and becomes Rachel's hero. Greene's first assignment as an EMS director places him in danger as he treats a dynamite-wired assailant with gunshot wounds.

A wounded gang member tries to leave the ER to exact revenge. Benton keeps Reese's hearing disability a secret from his co-workers. Jeanie tells Ross she'd like to be his physician assistant in the pediatric emergency room. Weaver interviews for the job as permanent chief of emergency medicine. Hathaway discloses to Ross that she might be pregnant but later discovers she's not. Lucy misplaces a dead body as she transports it to the morgue. Her inability to start an IV is revealed during a crisis. Corday realizes that her abilities exceed what will be demanded of her as an intern.

Jennifer plans to relocate to St. Louis and take Rachel with her. Carter places Lucy in charge of the Halloween party at the dormitory so he can do research for his presentation. But trouble occurs when two medical students take drugs with alcohol and almost die. An operation reveals that a couple's little girl is genetically male. Corday, anxious to celebrate Halloween, gets a pleasant surprise from Benton, who dresses like the '70s film character John Shaft for a special date. Weaver gets disappointing news regarding her quest as chief of emergency medicine.

Greene risks his life to save a teenage male prostitute. Because of the Halloween fiasco, Carter is terminated as resident advisor, and searches for a new place to live. He decides to move into Weaver's basement. Anspaugh realizes that Corday is overqualified to intern with Dale, who knows less than Corday does, and agrees to let Benton take over as Corday's resident. After the candidate chosen as chief of emergency medicine accepts a job at another facility and Weaver learns the committee is hiring someone else, she resigns as interim chief.

Frustrated with her inability to conceive, Hathaway confronts a pregnant woman opting for abortion. Weaver derives enjoyment from seeing Anspaugh muddle through as interim chief. The committee interviews Dr. Amanda Lee (MARE WINNINGHAM), who appears to be the first choice for the position as chief. Greene enjoys the male camaraderie at the fire station with the paramedics and firefighters until they try to initiate him with a hazing ritual. Corday's judgment falters after working for 36 hours without rest. Carter unintentionally hears Lucy's private notes in her palmtop computer and finds out what she really thinks about him.

Even though Carter and Lucy constantly bicker with each other, they join forces to save the life of a young girl who desparately needs a blood transfusion. Lucy and Carter search Chicago to locate her father, who is a perfect match for her rare blood.

Since today is the hospital's 100th anniversary, the new chief, Amanda Lee, arranges for Carter to escort a woman, Ruth Johnson who was born 100 years ago today, around the hospital. Lee encourages Greene to supervise a study on a new pain medicine, and he agrees. Benton considers cochlear implant surgery for Reese. Corday ends her relationship with Benton. Hathaway treats an 8-year-old boy whose friend was mysteriously shot and killed.

On Christmas Eve, Benton refuses to let Romano operate on a patient when it becomes evident that Romano is intoxicated. Jerry thinks that Lee may be stalking Greene. A brain dead patient gives the gift of life to a girl with his rare blood type. After a hectic day, Benton cheers up when Carla brings Reese to the hospital to see him. Corday shares dinner with a new beau. And Ross joins Hathaway and her family at mass.

A curious Greene discovers Lee's a fake and that Anspaugh never checked her credentials. A day care worker suggests to Benton that Reese requires a "special needs" environment because he's exhibiting problem behavior. A cop, Reggie Moore, who Jeanie treats for a minor injury, asks her on a date. Eventually, she accepts. Greene ponders becoming an astronaut after a friend recommends him for a mission. Carter is annoyed by Edson's behavior toward Lucy. Hathaway befriends Joi Abbott, an exhausted woman taking care of her ill son.

Hathaway clashes with Evans, who obtained a grant for a seminar at the clinic without consulting her. Ross jeopardizes a hospital study when he administers an experimental drug to a patient without the hospital's consent. Lucy begins her surgical rotation under Benton. Doyle accuses Romano of sexual harassment and asks Corday for support. Romano offers to reinstate Corday's surgical fellowship. And Jeanie agrees to date Dr. Graham Baker, a plastic surgeon.

Corday refuses to testify against Romano after he threatens Benton's career. A harried Anspaugh accepts Romano's offer to serve as acting chief. Greene befriends a Nigerian hospital worker, Mobalage (DJIMON HOUNSOU), who suffers from back pain. Because she was adopted, Weaver decides to search for her real parents. Ross forges papers through Hathaway's clinic in order to get equipment so that Joi Abbott can treat her dying son at home.

Benton takes a costly sign-language class. Romano suggests Benton enroll in a program whereby Benton would substitute for vacationing doctors at rural hospitals for high pay. As acting chief of emergency services, Romano delegates a plethora of responsibilities to Greene and Weaver. Lucy and Carter share a romantic tryst while on duty. Greene treats hospital worker Mobalage for impotency. Joi's son dies of a drug pain overdose and the police blame Ross. Anspaugh closes Hathaway's clinic because Ross got the medical equipment that administered the fatal dosage from the clinic. Jeanie and Ross are involved in a vehicular accident on an icy road. Emergency personnel feverishly work to save the lives of children involved in a school bus crash. Mobalage's wife suffers from multiple stab wounds. Carter and Lucy refrain from sexual relations with each other due to hospital policy. Ross resigns from the hospital and decides to move to either Portland or Seattle. He asks Hathaway, his fiancée, to join him, but she declines. No criminal charges are filed against Ross for the death of Joi's terminal son. Benton travels to Mississippi to earn extra money working as a "locum tenens" doctor--a visiting temp--at a rural hospital in a small town. Instead of a hospital, Benton finds a rural clinic run by Maureen (CELIA WESTON), a nurse practitioner and Catholic nun. Benton quickly learns that some of the white folks don't trust an African-American doctor. Through his determination and expertise, Benton slowly gains the respect of most of the townspeople. Back in Chicago, Jeanie suffers a medical setback.

While on a ride-along with paramedics, Carter drives the ambulance through a riot to get back to the hospital and accidentally hits a teenage boy. Jeanie is pursued by both Reggie and Dr. Baker. Lucy struggles to convince an Asian family that they should tell the grandmother that she has a fatal tumor. Hathaway decides not to leave with Ross even though she's pregnant. She also keeps her pregnancy a secret from him. Weaver treats a celebrity wrestler. A paramedic dies from a gunshot wound, and Carter thinks the bullet was meant for him. Kubby awakens from a coma and admits she stabbed herself. But Mobalage, who was tortured in his native country of Nigeria, awaits a deportation hearing for forging his visa.

Weaver visits a woman she thinks might be her biological mother. Later, Weaver realizes the woman cannot possibly be her mother. Hathaway finally makes an appointment to consult an obstetrician about her own pregnancy. Lucy begins her psychiatric rotation, but the patients don't take her seriously because she's so young. Greene helps Mobalage so he can testify at his own deportation hearing. Hathaway befriends a paranoid schizophrenic who delivers a normal baby.

Romano forces Benton to choose between two different fellowships. Greene and Corday become better friends on the way to a medical conference. Carter mentors a student. Lucy shows impressive skills during her psychiatric rotation. With amnesty granted, Mobalage now pursues a civil engineering license and leaves his job at the hospital. Jeanie treats a reverend who offers healing prayers in return. Hathaway's ultrasound is good.

A terrible storm causes a power outage, and the backup generators fail. The staff frantically works to keep patients alive. Carter tells Roxanne he doesn't want to have a relationship with her anymore. A 20-year-old comatose female patient from another floor is beaten, sexually assaulted and left at the emergency room.

Hathaway finally informs Ross about her pregnancy. She is disappointed when he tells her he won't be returning to Chicago. Just when Romano thinks he's convinced Benton to join his cardiothoracic team, Benton gets selected for and accepts the trauma fellowship. FBI agents secretly bring a patient to the emergency room. A terrible car accident ruins the lives of three students who were en route to their prom.

Weaver rescues an abandoned, drugged 2-year-old boy. Romano offers Corday the cardiothoracic fellowship that Benton rejected. Carla informs Benton that she got married last week and plans to move to Germany with her new husband and Reese. Later, Benton goes to Carla's apartment, takes Reese from the baby-sitter and brings him home. Jeanie realizes she cares for Officer Reggie Moore and tells him she has contracted hepatitis C. They have a meaningful talk. And Greene and Corday share their first kiss. Lucy struggles to break free of her Ritalin. An ultrasound reveals that Hathaway is pregnant with twins.
