Kausi 1 – 7 jaksoa

1 The Ends of the Earth
25.10.11
Our journey begins out on the frozen Arctic Ocean, close to the North Pole. The sun is back after 6 months of darkness. We follow a pair of courting polar bears, which reveal a surprisingly tender side. Next stop is the giant Greenland ice cap where waterfalls plunge into the heart of the ice, and a colossal iceberg calves into the sea. Humpback whales join the largest gathering of seabirds on earth to feast in rich Alaskan waters. Further south, the tree-line marks the start of the Taiga forest, containing one third of all trees on earth. Here 25 of the world’s largest wolves take on formidable bison prey.
2 Spring
25.10.11
It's spring, and warmth and life return to the magical ice worlds of the polar regions. In this episode, male Adelie penguins arrive in Antarctica; a Polar Bear mother hunts with her cubs in the Arctic; a Wolly Bear Caterpillar emerges from the snow; vast numbers of seabirds arrive on South Georgia; Elephant seals congregate on a beach, and female Adelie penguins arrive, chased from the water by killer whales.
3 Summer
1.11.11
For the animals of the polar regions, summer is a season of intense activity as they occupy themselves with the tasks of feeding and rearing their young. This episode features polar bear cubs learning to swim; a confrontation between Musk Oxen and Arctic Wolves; King penguins surfing in order to keep cool in the heat; Bull Fur seals fighting; Killer whales hunting a Minke whale, and a colony of Adelie penguins.
4 Autumn
1.11.11
Autumn in the polar regions is a time of dramatic battles and epic journeys for the animals that live there. This episode features Polar Bears gathering and sparring on the Arctic coast; Beluga Whales swimming into an estuary to thrash their bodies and exfoliate; Musk Ox males clashing as they defend their Harems; Adelie Penguin chicks swimming for the first time; A Leopard Seal hunting a penguin; and an Emperor Penguin trekking inland to breed.
5 Winter
8.11.11
In the extreme conditions of the polar winter, when temperatures reach as low as minus 70, only the toughest and most remarkable of animals can survive. This episode features a female Polar Bear trekking into the Arctic mountains to give birth; Eider ducks braving the winter in a giant ice hole; a Wolf and Bison fighting in an Arctic forest; and tiny Voles dodging a Great Grey owl. This episode also shows Polar bear cubs begining their life an icy den, and we see male Emperor penguins battling to protect their precious eggs from fierce storms.
6 The Last Frontier
8.11.11
Discover how the extraordinary riches and wonders of the polar regions have ensured that people still visit and live in them. It features the freezing city of Norilsk in Siberia; the Dolgan tribe, a traditional herding people in Siberia; Greenland's mineral wealth, and the wondrous Northern lights. There's also a visit to a research base in Antarctica which has been designed to withstand the world's most extreme winters.
7 On Thin Ice
15.11.11
David Attenborough travels to the polar regions to investigate the effect of rising temperatures on wildlife and the planet as a whole. He examines ice sheet depletion at the North Pole; food shortages faced by Arctic Polar Bears, and waterfalls of meltwater in Greenland. In Antarctica, David sees how glaciers are retreating, Adelie penguins are disappearing, and he examines the break up of the Wilkins Ice Shelf.

Tietoja tästä ohjelmasta

Narrated by David Attenborough and from the award-winning team behind Planet Earth comes the ultimate portrait of the earth's Polar Regions. The Arctic and Antarctic remain the greatest wildernesses on Earth. The scale and beauty of the scenery and the sheer power of the elements - the weather, the ocean and the ice - is unmatched anywhere else on our planet. Yet these harsh environments are teeming with life: home to iconic animals from polar bears to emperor penguins and from killer whales to wandering albatrosses. Using the latest camera technology to film on land, from the air, underwater and below the ice caps, Frozen Planet follows their fascinating lives throughout the seasons as they struggle to survive. With spectacular polar landscapes and amazing animal behavior, often filmed for the first time, it captures the drama of an extreme natural world. With both Poles under grave threat from climate change, this extraordinary series may be the last chance to witness these great wildernesses before they change forever.
