King Silas Benjamin (Golden Globe winner Ian McShane, "Deadwood") is the well-entrenched king of Gilboa, whose flag bears a divine butterfly symbol. Gilboa has its capital in Shiloh, a clean new city that is unspoiled by time or litter. Silas must deal with the tensions rising between Gilboa and neighboring nation Gath. When several prisoners of war are taken, a young soldier, David Shepherd (Chris Egan, "Eragon"), defies orders and crosses enemy lines to save them. Unknown to David, the soldier he saves is Jack Benjamin (Sebastian Stan, "The Covenant"), the son of the king. From that day forth, David's life will never be the same. As Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson) prepares the mansion for the arrival of the Gath military, King Silas (Ian McShane) and General Abner (Wes Studi) plot against David Shepherd (Chris Egan). David's noticeable absence at the peace treaty signing is called into question by Gath's leader, ultimately impeding the ceremony. Meanwhile, William (Dylan Baker) plans to assert his power over the treasury in an attempt to weaken the King. Jack (Sebastian Stan), outraged over his parents' dismissive treatment decides to go on an impromptu shopping spree. Allison Miller and Eamonn Walker also star.

Unbeknownst to Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson), King Silas (Ian McShane) steals away from her first royal ballet event to rush to the bedside of his ailing illegitimate son. While Rose and Jack (Sebastian Stan) scheme to tarnish David's (Christopher Egan) heroic public image with a night out on the town, Reverend Samuels (Eamonn Walker) and the King remain at odds. King Silas (Ian McShane) uses Port Prosperity to negotiate peace with Gath, forcing David (Christopher Egan) to choose between his King and his family. When citizens begin to rebel against Silas' decision, Michelle (Allison Miller) gets involved and further complicates the situation. The kingdom prepares for Judgment Day, an annual event where ten cases are chosen for King Silas (Ian McShane) to preside over. When Michelle (Allison Miller) and David (Chris Egan) are forced to compete for the tenth case, their relationship becomes strained. Jack (Sebastian Stan) and Katrina's (guest star Leslie Bibb) relationship intensifies as they conspire to attain more power. The king and queen's nephew Andrew Cross (guest star Macaulay Culkin) returns to the kingdom after years in exile, stirring up old conflicts within the royal family. King Silas (Ian McShane) sends Jack (Sebastian Stan) and David (Christopher Egan) to Gath to reinforce the peace agreement. David quickly learns that the trip is much more than just a diplomatic tour when Gath asks for an unusual and dangerous favor. Michelle (Allison Miller) discovers that her health care bill may have created more problems than it solved. Meanwhile, Silas faces the potential crisis of a deadly plague entering his city. King Silas' (Ian McShane) birthday celebration is interrupted by a citywide blackout that puts the royal family in danger. The blackout gives Michelle (Allison Miller) and David (Christopher Egan) a chance to be alone, and provides Jack (Sebastian Stan) with an opportunity to engage in his secret double life without being noticed. King Silas (Ian McShane) goes on a pilgrimage and takes a surprised David (Chris Egan) with him. While out in the country, David is introduced to the king's hidden life outside the palace walls. Meanwhile, Michelle (Allison Miller) and Jack's (Sebastian Stan) secret love lives are under the threat of being exposed forcing Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson) to take protective action. King Silas (Ian McShane) sends David (Chris Egan) on a quest to recover a national treasure, the Charter of Gilboa. While on the mission, David discovers shocking information about his father's death. Meanwhile, Jack's engagement to Katrina (guest star Leslie Bibb) brings grief from Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson) and generosity from Silas. Allison Miller, Dylan Baker and Eamonn Walker also star.

David (Chris Egan) is arrested for treason and Silas (Ian McShane) puts the trial in Jack's (Sebastian Stan) hands. Meanwhile, an unexpected medical condition pulls Michelle (Allison Miller) away from David's trial and brings her closer to Rose (Susanna Thompson). Also stars Eamonn Walker and Dylan Baker.

After imprisoning Jack (Sebastian Stan) and David (Chris Egan) for treason, Silas (Ian McShane) continues with his plan to hand over Port Prosperity to long-time enemy Gath. Meanwhile, Michelle (Allison Miller) seeks a way to keep David alive. Also stars Susanna Thompson and Dylan Baker.

Jack (Sebastian Stan) and William (Dylan Baker) make plans for Jack to take his father's place as King of Gilboa.
