In the series pilot, Bret Maverick wins big in a poker game by bluffing the owner of a local silver mine, but the losing mine owner refuses to accept his losses and hires Big Mike Macomb to kill Bret. Now, when he hears that the mine owner has been cheating the miners, Bret comes up with a plan to help the miners get a fair deal -- and save his own life.

An apparently innocent couple schemes to use Bret as a scapegoat in the plans to rob a bank. Mike Connors guest stars as Ralph Jordan.

Con woman Samantha Crawford (DIANE BREWSTER) gets the better of Bret when she beats him at a poker game with a little-known rule. Choosing to join forces rather than lose, Bret goes into business with Samantha -- but the partnership is only part two of her con.

In New Orleans, Bret and Bart Maverick see a way to win some money: They plan a trip aboard the River Princess, owned by wealthy Creole businessman Henri Devereaux, who, unfortunately, dislikes Americans. But when Bret and Bart find themselves in the middle of the kidnapping of Devereaux's daughter--and rescue her for a small fee--the riverboat owner is happy to invite them aboard.

Bret sees a way to make some money by arranging a boxing match between two very big, very tough, very mean fighters. But when one of the boxers quits, Bret must make a choice to lose the money . . . or fight the Battling Krueger. Guest starring EFREM ZIMBALIST, JR. as Dandy Jim Buckley.

Bret must stop a rancher from taking over the town after the rancher murders the marshall -- so he asks the townspeople to do something.

Bart has trouble telling the good guys from the bad when he and Samantha team up to recover stolen treasury plates.
