About this show

Throughout history, people from nearly every culture have spotted or spoken about a half-man, half-fish anomaly. What if there's a kernel of truth to the legend? MERMAIDS blends real-life events and phenomena with the story of two scientists who testify they found the remains of a sea creature with ties to human origin.

I'm surprised so many people actually believe something like this can actually exist. It appears they feel that Mermaids have came to be through evolution... Fish and humans are from completely different genetically evolved structures. Actually it's more viable that creatures such as bigfoot evolved and exist than it is likely an anomaly such as mermaids could. I believe people can build a case for just about anything and those susceptible to fantasy are drawn into it than those with stronger more realistic common sense views. As a previous person I am dissapointed that Animal Planet ran something like this as opposed to their general realistic educational programs.

There are good and bad points to this, first the good points. It does give information, though sparse on the problems marine and aquatic life face as a result of what humans do. It singles out the military and the US Navies underwater sonic experiments that have been proven to be disastrous for whales. It brings these tragedies to light but only just skimming over them. The Bad, this is a pseudo-documentary that does not actually give us any science about sea creatures. These creatures are fictitious and do not exist, and if you'll read more reviews on this page you'll see there are a lot of people who are claiming this to be true.

This show presents itself as a documentary, and leads you to believe it's recounting supposedly-true events. There's just a short "disclaimer" at the very end telling you it's fictional (in case you didn't already know). Crap like this masquerading as actual science is misleading and contributes to the dumbing-down of our society. Giving it one star, because I can't give it zero. Meanwhile, wishing the "Science" and "Discovery" channels would go back to science shows, "History" would go back to history shows, and whoever invented the "let's follow a shop full of morons"-format Reality Show dies in a fire.
