Adapted from Jeanette Winterson's acclaimed novel, this BAFTA-winning drama is the story of a young girl discovering her sexuality against a backdrop of religious fervour and small-town prejudice. Adopted at birth by a charismatic Evangelist, Jess grows up in 1960s northern England to find she is part of a larger plan. She has been ordained by Pastor Finch and her mother to spread God's word as a missionary. But forbidden passion in her teens brings Jess into conflict with all she's been taught to believe. Her mother begins to suspect that the Devil is within, and must be flushed out.
