How, how, how has this gotten the ratings it has and stayed on as long as it did?! Just awful. I love period dramas and I am easy to please. As long as the clothes and sets are nice, it has to be pretty terrible not to keep my attention... Clothes and sets are nice - production is BAD. I got halfway through the 2nd episode before I decided quit the series. Sorry to say that the performance of the actress they cast as the lead is so wooden, it was painful to watch. It made me feel bad on behalf of the other actresses of similar age cast in lesser roles. Anna Popplewell who played Lola for example, or really any of the other girls cast as the ladies in waiting, would have been better cast as the lead. However part of the poor performance must be down to direction, writing and things like the hokey, Hollywood teen-story music score. The basic story concept actually isn't even bad, it's just feels very much like so many other Americanny, Hollywoodized, plasticy and not-quite-likable series. Acting, casting, writing and directing are all just very shallow and lacking in genuine substance.

As with any series first few episodes are trying to find themselves. When it finally takes shape oh it's a great series. Romance , betrayal a bit of history lesson and pleasure to watch even if you don't like period series in general. It's good for any age (except young children).

I loved this show! The first few episodes are a bit iffy but around episode 4 it takes off and i really enjoyed it, it had me hooked and i couldn't wait to see what happened next. The ending was very rushed but with the circumstances it was understandable and gave a lot if closure for the audience.Great show
