He meets seven of these so called Short Poppies, a diverse group of unique individuals all played by comedy tour de force, Rhys Darby. Meet Terry Pole: Thrill seeker Terry is always after an adrenalin rush. He's the local life guard and is a part time leg model. He's a self titled super star and local stud.

Steve's narcolepsy prevents him holding down a job which has gifted him the opportunity to become a full time UF-ologist after a series of 'out of this world' experiences. He holds a support group at the local library for people who have experienced alien contact and runs a hotline through which he gathers information on encounters.

Young entrepreneur Ron is a local boy who has set up his own whale watching business to earn the tourist dollar. He's borrowed his father's rowboat, and two sets of binoculars and he has a loaf of bread for feeding, and has an unrivaled knowledge of what whales look like.

She penns letters, she argues and she protests. She isn't really happy unless she's unhappy. For her, life is about pointing out all the things that are wrong. Whether it be her own friends, or the noise from a local daycare.

Bill runs the park with military precision despite having never been accepted into the army. Bill prides himself on being an outdoors expert and friend to the trees.

Local artist and sole mother Louise works a car park toll booth. The toll booth is also her painting studio and she does a popular line in portraits of drivers in their cars.

Rhod's pride and joy is his Mazderatti, a converted Mazda that he hopes will be his ticket to gaining membership to the local car club. Rhod doesn't really know anything about cars, that's all the work of his best mate Dwayne, but Rhod knows plenty about the law because he's the one and only local lawyer.

He's also in town to attend a screening that the network have put on for the local people to show them highlights from the upcoming series that has been made about their town.
