True to the actual stories in many ways, these videos are terrific. Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes is far and away the best, but one could reasonably argue that he wasn't exactly true to the character; regardless, the character he brings to life is amusing and intriguing. There are some techniques to some of the videos which are a bit odd, but these are forgivable because the adaptation of the stories is really very good. My favorite is the Red Headed League followed by the Final Problem. The others are pretty good, too. This is the best of the 4 collections of Brett as Holmes.

It's almost as if the stories came to life on a screen. The most loyal to the original stories this series features the master actor Jeremy Brett who seems to channel Sherlock Holmes' every nuances perfectly like it's second nature and David Burke does a perfect John Watson. Several fine actors make guest appearances such as Charles Grey (Rocky Horror Picture Show, Diamonds Are Forever), Joss Ackland (Lethal Weapon 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter films) and Jeremy Kemp (War & Remembrance) to name a few. The direction is excellent and the production so very detailed in fact some of the drawings from The Strand were used for set design. The series garnered two sequel series and several TV movies until Brett's untimely demise. This series is a must for any Sherlockian and picking your favorite episode will be like picking your favorite child. Watch them all.
