I was very impressed with the book, like many people, when I read it years ago. I am considerably less impressed by its adaptation into a series. In addition to being thin in atmosphere and dumbed down for a contemporary mass audience, it lacked art and didn't stimulate my cortex as it should have. Also, Caleb Carr's research into the New York of this era was impeccable and a fair amount of the book was not occupied by the plot, but with a pleasurable tour through the sensory experience of that world--none of which was present in the series. All in all, a mediocre effort.

The book was great so i wanted to like this adaptation. Detail is lacking but thats not the most bothersome point. The main character played by dakota fanning comes across as incredibly uptight rather than an advocate for womens rights. She seems like shes tryi g too hard to push the feminist point across. Not sure about the cast selection.

Seems like a good show. Now if they would just publish the new episodes in a timely manner! Why did I buy the season again?
