12/7/26
The story begins at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, on the great estate built by John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough. His descendant, Winston, visited often and, while there, developed an interest in history, war, and writing. Fascinated by his ancestor, Winston later began his biography of John–Marlborough: His Life and Times.
2 The March to War
12/8/2
In 1932, Winston–then a low-level, out-of-power politician–visited Germany to do research for his biography and saw first-hand the rise of Hitler. Recognizing the patterns in the conflict between John Churchill and French king Louis XIV, Winston predicted imminent war in a time when peace was desired at all costs.
3 Grand Strategies
12/8/9
As World War II raged, Winston succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. And while France faced total Nazi occupation, Winston drew upon the lessons of Marlborough’s war leadership, particularly in the Battle of Ramillies, to eventually win the war.

关于此节目

Eminent historian David Starkey (Monarchy) tells the parallel stories of the two greatest war leaders in British history, both of whom were named Churchill. It is well known that Winston Churchill led Britain and her allies to victory against Hitler in World War II; less well-remembered is John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, who battled a much earlier would-be dictator of Europe, the Sun King Louis XIV of France. John Churchill was not only Winston’s ancestor, but he was also his inspiration and subject; Winston was a writer and historian before he was Prime Minister, authoring a massive, million-word biography of John Churchill, titled Marlborough: His Life and Times. Starkey argues that it was the decade he spent immersed in history, working on Marlborough that turned Winston from a politician into a great statesman, and prepared him for the immense task of leading the nation against Nazi Germany.
