Prime Minister Pitt calls an election and uncertainty grips the country. While Ross watches Cornwall suffer under the power of Truro's MP, George Warleggan, Demelza's infidelity leaves her strained between her husband and a lovesick Hugh, who is set to rival George in the upcoming election. The Enyses contemplate having a child and Elizabeth seeks the same to secure her marriage. Meanwhile, Morwenna uses Osborne's affair with her sister Rowella to keep the reverend's advances at bay and Demelza seeks to reconcile rival local Lords Falmouth and Basset. A corn riot erupts in Truro and Zacky's son Jago leads the charge. Sam and Drake attempt to dissuade him but arrive too late and a merchant is killed in the fighting. Tom Harry tells George that the Carnes and Jago murdered the man, and Ross finds himself powerless to save his brothers-in-law. He keeps the news from Demelza, who has been called to Tregothnan where an ailing Hugh tells Demelza he wants more. At the execution, Ross rallies the crowd to his cause and wins a reprieve for Sam and Drake, but Jago Martin is hanged. Reunited at Nampara and reminded of the fragility of life, the Poldarks open themselves honestly to each other, looking to rebuild their marriage and grateful for the chance.

The Poldarks determine to get their relationship on track and the Enyses announce they're with child. Hugh's worsening health threatens his chance to stand in the election however, and the prospect of him remaining in Cornwall adds pressure to the Poldark's fragile marriage. At the Sawle Feast, Tom Harry challenges Sam to a wrestling match. When Emma offers herself as the prize, Sam accepts. To Emma's disappointment Sam gifts Tom the victory, realising he doesn't want to fight for Emma's affection. To everyone's horror Hugh continues to worsen and remains unfit to stand in the election. Falmouth offers the candidacy to Ross, who accepts. Osborne informs the Warleggans, who make moves to secure their victory and Emma takes a job at Tehidy, planning to return in a year to reassess things with Sam. At the election Ross wins a narrow victory but having remained at Hugh's side at Tregothnan, Demelza is not there to see it. Falmouth congratulates Ross before confiding that Hugh has died. The Poldarks are reunited at Nampara where the depth of Demelza's attachment to Hugh is made clear to Ross before he reveals his election victory. They share a tentative embrace and look to a future in which everything will change.

Ross makes his maiden speech in parliament and finds himself a little notoriety in London where he also re-unites with a now adolescent Geoffrey Charles at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. In Cornwall, Demelza contends with a failing mine and fixing Drake's broken heart. Dwight and Caroline welcome a baby daughter, Sarah, into the world but Dwight's happiness is short lived as he makes a disturbing diagnosis. Ossie meanwhile tends to a dying parishioner, Nathaniel Pearce, who confesses to losing his clients' money on bad investments, money secured in Pascoe's bank. He takes the information to the Warleggans in the hope of selling the information to help pay for his Rowella habit. George hosts an extravagant party at Trenwith in the hope of buying his way back into Parliament via purchasing a borough. His new friend, the dangerous socialite Monk Adderley, makes the necessary introductions to set George on his way. Having returned to Cornwall at Demelza's behest to help fix the crises at Wheal Grace, Ross finds himself estranged from his wife, but also his friends due to his new position of power. However, in rescuing Tholly from a beating he is brought back into the fold, and his jubilation takes him on a reckless incursion of Trenwith's grounds where he finds Elizabeth taking air in the garden during the party. They speak as friends, before Adderley arrives to challenge Ross' presence. Ross returns home to Demelza and they finally talk openly and honestly, he tells her he visited Trenwith and how things are now with him and Elizabeth. Finally, they are reconnecting and they make love.

Lord Falmouth urges Ross to return to Westminster as George's alliance with Adderley gives him the opportunity to purchase a borough of his own. A heartbroken Dwight tells Caroline that Sarah has a heart defect and their daughter dies shortly after of a cold. Unable to face Killewarren in her grief, Caroline leaves Dwight to be alone in London. Ossie has meanwhile been visiting Rowella and is seen leaving by her husband Arthur, who grows suspicious. Wanting to escape the dangerous affair, Ossie plans to have Morwenna committed to an asylum so that he can move on legally. When Wheal Grace's miners blast into Wheal Maiden's tunnels it results in a disastrous flood, forcing Ross, Sam and Dwight into acts of heroism. Emma returns to give Sam her answer but confesses she's now engaged to another man, whilst Drake is persuaded into courting Rosina. Ross remains in Cornwall and decides to plough his savings into resurrecting the mine rather than allow it to close and impoverish his employees. He then bids a tender farewell to his family, confident in Demelza's ability to govern in his absence. However, unbeknownst to Ross George has secured the borough of St Michael, and with it his own return to Westminster.

With grain prices rising across the country working men struggle to support their families. To his frustration, Ross' efforts in Westminster meet successive failures and he is advised to take a slyer approach. Demelza continues her effort at matching Drake with Rosina in Cornwall and Osborne hires a sterner nurse to remove John Conan from Morwenna permanently, and with him Morwenna's shield from his advances. Drake asks Rosina to marry him and Osborne continues calling on Rowella while her husband Arthur visits his parents. In London, Ross attempts to make Caroline deal with her grief but finds her in Monk Adderley's orbit who only helps her ignore it. Tensions between Adderley and Ross rise again. Arthur discovers Rowella's affair and murders Osborne. Hoping for a future with Morwenna, Drake jilts Rosina. Ross pitches a plan to Falmouth for landowners to top up their employees' wages and Falmouth forces Ross to compromise his principles in return for Falmouth backing his plan. Ross and Basset return to Cornwall to trial the scheme and to George's immense frustration, the landowners vote in favour and his success puts Ross on the Prime Minister's radar.

Nathaniel Pearce's death reveals how he embezzled Pascoe's clients funds. Aware of this, the Warleggans instigate Pascoe's collapse. In London, Ross finds Geoffrey Charles led astray by Adderley and steers his nephew from trouble before telling Elizabeth. Sam convinces Drake to return from exile following his abandonment of Rosina and Morwenna's subsequent rejection and Morwenna tells Dwight she is pregnant with Osborne's child. Dwight meanwhile helps in the development of Truro's infirmary as Ross, Geoffrey Charles and Caroline return to Cornwall. Drake returns to the village with Sam, who threatens retribution on any who attack his brother and Caroline is reunited with Dwight. Demelza's plan to restore public faith by paying in money to Pascoe's fails and Pascoe's closes. Ross hurries on an urgent mission imploring Basset for help, but he refuses. At the infirmary's opening celebration, George gloats over Pascoe's ruination and Ross calls him out. Elizabeth faints, later confiding to George that she's with child. His jubilation is short lived however when Basset creates a new bank in which Ross and Pascoe are partners. Ross decides to take Demelza to London with him and they bid their family and friends a heartfelt farewell, arriving in the city for a passionate getaway.

The Poldarks, Enyses and Warleggans enjoy London's distractions. George dotes on Elizabeth, delighting at the prospect of an heir and announcing plans to host a charity ball. Meanwhile, Lady Whitworth has a physician agree to commit Morwenna to an asylum before Morwenna miscarries and flees the vicarage for good. At the Warleggan ball Adderley takes a fancy to Demelza, betting George he'll cuckold Ross within a month. Demelza's attempts to divert Adderley's attentions only manage to encourage him and Ross' fury at this boils over in Westminster. Having been manhandled, Adderley challenges Ross to a duel that Ross accepts, despite Dwight's attempts to call it off. Ross kills Adderley in the duel but is injured himself. Adderley's friend, John Craven, tells Ross that Adderley had to buy a witness' silence, instructing Ross to repay the debt to George to settle a wager between them. Geoffrey Charles comments on Valentine's likeness to Ross, causing George's suspicions to return and destroying his marriage's recent harmony. Ross pays George Adderley's debt but George hurls the money in Ross' face. Ross discovers later that Demelza has left him for Cornwall, having found only trouble in London.

Elizabeth obtains a tonic designed to induce an early labour, hoping to persuade George that Valentine is his child once and for all. Ross returns to Cornwall to mend thins with Demelza, realising he killed Adderley because he could not kill Hugh. Morwenna seeks out Drake and tentatively agrees to marry him but the Warleggan's rift is plain as they return to Cornwall. Having learnt of Morwenna's engagement, Elizabeth calls on her as Drake and Demelza obtain Drake's wedding license. This time Elizabeth does not seek to intervene in the love story, but when George returns home he furiously turns Morwenna out of the house. He is further enraged by Ross' appearance at Trenwith looking for Morwenna. Spurred by George's violence, Elizabeth takes her potion and a painful labour commences. Dwight delivers the Warleggans a daughter, Ursula, and George relates news of his knighthood to Elizabeth. However, Caroline later tells the Poldarks of Elizabeth's continuing ailment and Ross rides to Trenwith. He learns to his horror that Dwight could not save her and Elizabeth has died. Demelza finds him lost to reverie on the headlands and he confesses his fear of losing her too. She reminds him of their love for each other and that they can only be grateful to have each other while they do. The family unite for Drake and Morwenna's wedding and the Poldarks look to a new century of change together.

About this show

Period drama set in the 1780s. Ross Poldark joins the army to avoid charges of smuggling, leaving behind his sweetheart, Elizabeth, with the promise that he will return soon. Three years later, wounded and scarred, Ross returns home to discover that his father has died, his estate is in ruins and Elizabeth is set to marry his cousin, Francis.
