1 The Grand Design

Jim's finger is now on the nuclear button. Confused under some tough questioning, he comes up with a surprising grand design for defence. He is going to cancel the Trident nuclear defence programme and restore conscription. Sir Humphrey will have something to say about this.
2 The Ministerial Broadcast

As Jim is coached and groomed for a television broadcast to announce his new defence policy, Sir Humphrey is more concerned with what he says than in how he says it. With Bernard's help, Sir Humphrey gets to work turning the cabinet against Jim's plan.
3 The Smoke Screen

When Jim decides to champion his Health Minister's plan to abolish smoking through excessive taxation, a horrified Sir Humphrey calls in the tobacco lobby to prevent the move. Jim soon gets himself into a bit of a muddle with his ministers and a quick reshuffle might be the best solution.

Sir Humphrey tries to manoeuvre Jim's political adviser out of her office. Territorial battle ensues and, caught in the cross fire, Bernard considers opposing Sir Humphrey for once in his career. It is going to take some tough tactics to keep Sir Humphrey away from Number 10.
5 A Real Partnership

The Government runs into financial crisis just as MPs and top civil servants are due for an increase in pay. Sir Humphrey relies on all his finest skills to push through his own claim. He puts forward a plan for an independent assessor to decide on pay rises, although this assessor might not actually be especially independent.
6 A Victory for Democracy

Called upon to take action to prevent a Commonwealth country from being taken over by Marxists, Jim has his first clash as Prime Minister with the Foreign Office. Sir Humphrey doesn't really care who wins, as long as Britain keeps the contract to build the new airport.
7 The Bishop's Gambit

One of the Prime Minister's duties is to recommend the appointment of bishops to the Queen. Given a choice of two presented by the Church, Jim prefers neither. Sir Humphrey has his own reasons for wanting a third. Meanwhile, a crisis unfolds involving a British nurse arrested in the Middle East.

As Jim slides down the popularity polls, Sir Humphrey finds himself at the centre of a spy scandal. Papers from an old enquiry appear to implicate him in clearing a Russian agent of wrongdoing. Can the hapless Prime Minister and the Machiavellian master save themselves from public disgrace?
