Not Going Out

Lee (played by Lee Mack) is unburdened by ambition or drive, drifting from one ill-advised job to another, and living off the goodwill and generosity of his clean living Californian landlady Kate (Megan Dodds, "Spooks"). Whilst Kate is determined to push Lee into making something of his life, uptight accountant Tim (fellow BAFTA winner and Stand-up, Tim Vine) struggles to get over his break-up with Kate and cope with her rapidly blossoming friendship with Lee. 2006 Avalon Television Ltd. Tim's grandmother dies, bringing him and Kate closer together, much to Lee's concern. He's encouraged to share his thoughts with a therapist, who is not impressed with Lee's inability to have a proper conversation. Lee finds himself increasingly stressed out while trying to teach Kate how to drive. Following Kate's advice, he tries yoga - but his technique leaves a lot to be desired. A trip to a local acupuncturist (Miranda Hart, Hyperdrive) is no more successful, so he resorts to more extreme measures. Kate and Lee are forced to take in a roommate - a surly 14-year-old boy, Nicky (Rupert Simonian). Lee's attempts to bond with the teenager prove less than successful, while Tim and Nicky discover they have quite a lot in common. Lee finally manages to get a job as a caretaker. But taking up the new post involves moving out of the apartment. Kate interviews potential new roommates including Pete (Duncan Duff), and Tim sees an opportunity to get back together with Kate. Lee's new boss (Adrian Hood) proves to be a taskmaster. Now that Lee's former roommate Kate has moved back to America, Tim decides to sell the apartment. Faced with homelessness, Lee announces he'll buy the apartment himself and sets to work putting off any other prospective buyers - including Tim's sister Lucy. A misunderstanding leads Lucy to persuade Lee to pretend to be gay in order to get closer to an attractive new business acquaintance, Guy. Initially resistant, Lee changes his mind when he discovers there's something in the arrangement for him - tickets to Wembley. Lee is becoming increasingly irritated by Guy's constant presence in the apartment, and his distrust of him is fueled by the discovery that he runs a lap-dancing club. Lucy is worried about the age gap between her and Guy, a concern that increases when Guy turns up to meet her with his grandson in tow. In an effort to appear as intellectual as Lucy's friends, Lee shows off his 'knowledge' of the art world, holding forth on the subject of an unknown artist who his cleaner Barbara has told him is the next big thing. As Lucy and Guy's relationship intensifies, Lee starts to feel his own lack of a girlfriend, and he is encouraged to try speed dating. Lee meets Daisy, and, in a moment of desperation, asks her out. When Guy showers Lucy with expensive clothes prior to whisking her off for a mystery weekend away, Lee's suspicions of Guy are aroused once again. After some high-level surveillance, he comes to the conclusion that Guy and Lucy's romantic trip is actually a front for a diamond-smuggling operation. When Lucy announces that she is pregnant, Lee wonders if the father might accidentally be him. He can't bring himself to tell Lucy how he thinks it might have happened but Tim guesses. Lee is insufferably smug when he wins £1000 in a writing competition with an essay entitled "Disability in the Workplace." Lucy is moved to tears when she reads the essay and had no idea that Lee was so sensitive. When Tim and Lee try to organize a surprise party for Lucy's 30th birthday, their ideas of what makes a good party differ widely. Tim likes a few games of charades while Lee likes a game in which there are no competitors for Lucy's attention. A new neighbour moves in upstairs and his constant noise drives Lucy to distraction. She begs Lee and Tim to get him to stop but neither is man enough. Lucy is stressed. She has an important speech to make at a Recruitment Conference and nobody to help her write it. Lee sees an opportunity to impress her and offers his services but at the expense of Tim, who also thinks he's the best man for the job. Lee is horrified when he hears that Lucy is considering marriage to Pavlov, a mechanic from the old Eastern bloc, just so that he can stay in the country. Lee's father turns up at the apartment unannounced. This is the man who walked out of the family home when Lee was four, never paid his maintenance, and ate Lee's goldfish. Lee wants him out of the flat but Lucy tells him that the only way forward is to forgive and forget. Arriving home after a night out in a club Tim discovers that he has picked up the wrong coat, which has a pocket full of drugs. Further investigation reveals that the coat belongs to Larry 'the butcher' Stubbs. Now Lee and Tim must return the coat without getting killed.

When a twenty-year old girl turns up on Lee's doorstep and announces that he might be her father, Lee goes into immediate denial. Until, that is, he remembers a one-night stand he had at a party that Tim threw to celebrate the end of his accountancy exams back in the 1980's. Is Lee mature - or rich enough - to be a father?

Lucy is fed up of Lee treating her flat as if he owns it. He promises to change but omits to mention that he has already let the flat out to a film director who is paying Lee £500 to use the flat while Lucy's out at work.

Lucy and Tim's parents, Geoffrey and Wendy, are separating. Geoffrey moves into Lucy's flat, banishing Lee to the sofa. To get his room back and avoid being thrown onto the street, Lee must now play Relate Counsellor to patch up the marriage.

An old lady wanders into Lucy's flat and joins Lee on the sofa. When it becomes clear that she doesn't know who she is, Lee throws her out only to discover that she has a rich son who always pays a handsome reward to the person who brings her home.

Stuck in a coma, with friends and family gathered round his hospital bed, Lee dreams of a perfect life with Lucy. But is it really so perfect and will the reality match up?

When Tim joins a band at work and Lucy falls for the lead guitarist, Lee becomes jealous, and decides that if he cannot beat them he should join them.

Lee's lazy weekend is wrecked when his scrounging father turns up unexpectedly. Having just come out of hospital, he needs somewhere to stay for the weekend. Will Lee take on the demanding role of carer?

In a desperate bid to prove his manliness, Lee joins Tim, Daisy and Lucy on a camping weekend in the middle of a dark, spooky forest.

To impress Lucy, Lee starts training for a 10 kilometre fun run, only to injure himself immediately. In an effort to hide the injury from Lucy, he gets himself a secret sports massage, but this just leads to more trouble.

Lucy finds herself working on a government initiative encouraging men to regularly check themselves for lumps. Eager to please Lucy, Lee follows the campaign's advice and discovers something he was not expecting.

After Lucy suffers a mild indiscretion whilst drunk and claims to have no memory of the event, she and Lee embark on an experiment with a bottle of home-made potato hooch to prove once and for all that you can remember what happens when you are mashed.

When Lucy accidentally runs over a pet rabbit belonging to the daughter of an important client, she needs Lee and Daisy to help cover her tracks. She asks Lee to take the blame, which ends in disastrous consequences. Tim's absence from the series is explained as him being in Germany on a work placement.

While on a skiing holiday in Eastern Europe, Daisy, Lee and Lucy, who has broken her arm, become trapped on a cable car after Daisy jams the mechanism. When a pregnant woman on board (Pooky Quesnel) goes into labour, it's up to Lee to deliver the baby.

When Lucy enrols at Night School on a training course in counselling, Lee takes advantage of her new-found skill to help patch things up with his father. But the joint therapy sessions throw up more questions than answers.

Lee attempts to stop Lucy from flirting with male delegates at a three-day annual trade conference in order for herself to gain work, by posing as her husband, and then father. Things don't go according to plan though, when Lucy's mother, and eventually real father, turn up at the conference.

Lee decides that the best way to get Lucy to notice him is to make her jealous, but Daisy sets him up with Rachel (Joanna Bobin), a Fatal Attraction-style psychopath who proceeds to stalk him. Meanwhile, Daisy showcases various superhero and supervillain outfits for an upcoming hen do.

When Lucy's first love Scott (Simon Farnaby) reappears and asks her to be in a play that he wrote for her, Lee has to fight for her attention, which ends disastrously (at first).

Lucy's god-daughter is suddenly dumped on her the night before the girl's birthday party, so Lucy and Lee have to think of some appropriate humour. Lee goes to a magic shop to get what he needs, which leads to nothing but trouble.

Lee's father wins £400 at the horse racing and he decides to spend it on a boat. In an attempt to impress Lucy, Lee persuades her to come along, even though she has a fear of water.

In an effort to create the perfect Christmas for Lucy, Lee invites her parents to join the two of them and Daisy (Katy Wix) in a snug old house in the country which used to belong to his deceased aunt. Christmas spirit is in short supply, and their visit takes a turn for the worse as Lucy discovers that the house has not been lived in for years and there appears to be a spooky presence.

When Lucy has her handbag stolen from right under Lee's nose, he feels the need to prove his manliness over and over and over again.

Lee's big mouth has got him and Lucy invited to a christening party thrown by new neighbours Toby and Anna, and now they have no time to find the perfect present for the baby who has everything.

When Lucy decides it is time to have a baby, she is surprised to find the whole family taking a personal interest in the conception.

Lucy aspires to be friends with her posh new neighbours Toby and Anna, but she hasn't reckoned on Lee dragging her back down to earth.

In an attempt to impress Lucy with his intellectual prowess, Lee joins Daisy as a contestant on the TV quiz show Pointless.

Frank's drinking becomes a problem and forces Lee and Lucy to reassess the living arrangements in the flat.

No matter what happens, Lucy's surprise party for her parents' anniversary must remain a secret or it won't be a surprise. So why she tells Lee about it is anyone's guess.

Flying off on a summer holiday, Lucy and Daisy endure the worst flight of their lives when Lee gets a bad case of the jitters on the plane.

Lee spends time in the bar with Toby worrying that the woman of his dreams is drifting further away.

The will-they-won't-they tension reaches new highs in this epic series finale for Christmas that sees Lucy and Lee in previously uncharted emotional waters.
