This series has a lot of the things that made the UK office a great show; it is genuinely funny and has great writing. It is also proof that Merchant was the brains behind the office, and not Ricky Gervias (even more apparent if you watch the unfunny "David Brent Life on the Road"). The main issue with this series is Merchants character, he comes across as too desperate for sex, it is a bit creepy to be honest and his character never seems to develop beyond that. At least David Brent was a nice guy at heart, but this character is a creep who will literally shag anything that moves. Maybe that is the point, but his character has no redeeming qualities. The film wraps things up but in an unconvincing way. Maybe if there was a full series we would have seen a lot more character development, I can see why it was cancelled though.

This show brings all of Stephen Merchant's great comedy, along with a great story line and brilliant 80s soundtrack, together to make something special. Its laugh out loud, and if you're a fan of Stephen's previous work, you'll definitely enjoy this

Proof, as if it were needed, that Merchant was the actual brains behind the comedy of Gervais. Long live Smerch.
