Best friends Kate and Michael travel from Los Angeles to Seattle for a book signing and Q&A for Michael’s first graphic novel. Their trip up north quickly goes south when Michael discovers Kate has been keeping a secret from him. Betrayed and angry, Michael ditches her for a stiff drink and a fast hook up at a local gay bar. On their return flight, a traumatic event helps the two friends reconcile their differences. They return to Los Angeles a little beat up, a little wiser, a little closer.

Kate’s boss Stella sends her to represent their PR firm at an industry panel, but it’s not what Kate expected. Michael meets with his editor Dorinda about his new graphic novel, but it doesn’t go well; he has a serious case of writer’s block and a looming deadline. Michael crashes Kate and Danny’s date night, much to Danny’s chagrin. Kate and Michael commiserate over dinner until they’re interrupted by Ryan, Michael’s ex-fiance. Danny hides a secret from Kate as best he can.

Emboldened after a successful PR event for work, Kate approaches her boss Stella about an exciting potential client, deaf model Ben Genovese. Disappointed by Stella’s response, Kate binge eats brownies in the office only to find out they are filled with pot. High and paranoid, Kate texts for help and Michael comes to her rescue. Feeling creatively stifled and a little lonely, Michael decides to go out and let off steam with Ryan.

Michael’s mother Annie and his brother Jacob visit Michael from Boston for Thanksgiving. Kate attempts to host the perfect Thanksgiving dinner for Michael and his family, but secrets threaten to ruin the holiday and a physical altercation ensues between Danny and Jacob. Stressed out by family, Michael ignores Ryan’s texts throughout the day. Annie makes peace with Michael and helps him out of his creative slump. Kate confronts Danny about what happened, but he still doesn’t tell her.
5 The Way We Were

Ryan’s Palm Springs vacation home is the site of Kate, Danny, Michael and Ryan’s best and worst memories together. A series of flashbacks reveal how each relationship has grown and deteriorated. Kate meets Ryan for the first time. Danny invites his boss Paul to Palm Springs to schmooze. Michael meets Ryan’s ex-boyfriend Adam during Ryan’s birthday pool party. Michael makes a discovery that changes everything.

Danny confesses to Kate that he’s lost his job. Kate reacts by being more proactive at work. Michael finds himself feeling inspired and works on a new graphic novel, a memoir based on his childhood. Ryan opens up to Michael and tells him he wants to get back together, but Michael feels uncertain. To make up for his mistakes, Danny plans a last minute surprise engagement party that just might be the last straw for Kate.

About this show

In Los Angeles, best friends Kate and Michael, who are deaf, have been trying to find that perfect balance that eludes every twentysomething. In work, life, and love, Kate and Michael have experience both joys and struggles. Kate has been toiling away at a public relations firm, too meek to ask for a promotion, and too scared to leave. Michael experienced a brief burst of fame when his first graphic novvel garnered critical acclaim, but not much else. With the deadline for his next book looming, Michael finds himself creatively blocked. As another fall approaches in the city of angels, suddenly eveything changes for the both of them when Michael breaks off his engagement to the suave and dangerously charming Ryan, leaving Kate worried for him. The breakup brings out an ugly side to Michael, who learns to lean on alcohol and drugs. As Kate tries to be there for her heartbroken best friend, she is thrown when her longtime boyfriend Danny suddenly proposes to her. Danny's got problems of his own, and to hide them from Kate, he figures showering her with gifts will keep her off his trail. With so many dynamics shifting in their friendship, and their lives, Kate and Michael find themselves drifting apart from each other. Can they find their way back to each other while figuring out what they want from their respective partners, as well as their next steps in their professional lives? Will their friendship survive?
