Before The Expanse. Before Battlestar Galactica...there was Babylon 5. This show was groundbreaking on multiple fronts. It was the first show to have a long-term multi-year storyline (JMS's Five-year plan). It was also the first TV show to use CGI for all its visual effects, which resulted in incredible visuals that still stand up even by modern standards. And the show's creator (Joe Michael Straczynski) was one of the first showrunners to actively engage with fans via the internet. Unlike modern TV shows, Babylon 5 takes its time with developing its ambitious plot and its characters. By the 4th season it's exploring epic and profound themes, not to mention some of the best space battles that have ever been committed to screen. If you're (like me) a fan of The Expanse and impatiently waiting for next season, I can strongly recommend Babylon 5 to tide you over. IMHO it's one of the greatest science fiction shows in TV history.

It is all that other 5 star reviewers have said, and more. Loved it years ago, then again when it was rerun, and loved it again just last year when I pulled out the DVD set and binge watched it all again. It is so much more than just the cutting edge effects for the time, with some deep underlying themes that are still relevant today, and some poignant one liners...especially from G'Kar - my favourite being "I don't need to teach them anything, they need to unlearn fear, unlearn hatred".

Babylon 5 is one of the best sci fic shows of all time. It's a show that has it all, action, drama, suspense, awesome space battles and much more. Brilliantly written as a 5 year story arc that spanned the shows run JMS tells a tremendous story and pays of all the plot points he laid throughout the run. The acting is sensational and some of the actors should have won way more awards than they did. My only gripe is with Warner Brothers who choose to do nothing with the show. This show needs a HD release or a new series but they have shelved it for years. SD is not doing it any justice and with Star Trek now back on TV time for B5 to do the same.
