Sasuke and Gaara'a anticipated match begins. Gaara eerily talks to himself, as though addressing someone. Gaara begins his attack, transforming inside his Sand armor. But Sasuke has increased his speed to a level that amazes the audience.

Sauske's speed and moves are identical to Lee's Taijutsu. But Gaara is not an opponent who can be defeated with just Taijutsu. Naruto knows that Gaara lives to kill, and he pleads with Kakashi to stop the match. But Kakashi merely watches intently.

During the match, someone has used Genjutsu to put everyone in the arena to sleep. The Sand Ninja led by Orochimaru have begun their plan to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. However, Kankuro and Temari are concerned about Gaara's wounds. They take Gaara and leave the arena, putting off the plot against Hidden Leaf. Sasuke's match against Gaara is cancelled, and Sasuke goes after Gaara and the Sand Ninja.

The Sound and Sand Ninja, along with Orochimaru, begin their move to destroy Hidden Leaf Village. The arena has become a battleground. Kakashi orders Sakura to her first A-rank mission since the Land of Waves. The mission is to pursue Sasuke and give him assistance together with Naruto and Shikamaru. As additional back-up, Kakashi uses his Summoning Jutsu to call up "Pakkun," his ninja hound. Freed from the Genjutsu by Sakura, Naruto and Shikamaru follow Sakura to go after Sasuke, without knowing the reason why. Meanwhile, up on the roof, the Hokage and Orochimaru face each other, poised for battle...

Along with Pakkun, Naruto, Sakura and Shikamaru are in hot pursuit of Sasuke. Pakkun senses nine of Orochimaru's men coming after them. Shikamaru suggests a diversionary tactic.The strategy would mean one person staying back as a decoy and while the enemy is occupied, the three would make a run for it. The chance that the decoy will be killed is very high.

Orochimaru traps the Hokage inside a barrier and continue to battle. Using the Forbidden Summoning Jutsu: Reanimation Orochimaru summons the First and Second Hokage to fight the Third Hokage. The First Hokage uses his Secret Wood Style Jutsu: Deep Forest Emergence which only he can perform and traps the Third Hokage in a tangle of branches. However, the Third Hokage summons the Monkey King Enma...

Sasuke finally catches up to Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro. Kankuro escapes with Gaara leaving Temari to face Sasuke. She uses her Ninja Art: Sand Storm to torment Sasuke. But Sasuke uses a Substitution Jutsu to overpower Temari and gets back into pursuit. Meanwhile, the Third Hokage and Orochimaru continue to battle. Beneath Orochimaru's mask, an unfamiliar young face appears and the Hokage is shocked. Orochimaru has taken over the body of a young man with his Immortality Jutsu. The next body Orochimaru targets is Sasuke!

The battle between the Hokage and Orochimaru rages on. Finally, the Hokage resorts to a Jutsu unknown to Orochimaru, the Sealing Jutsu known as "Reaper Death Seal." The Grim Reaper extracts the souls from the First and Second Hokage, leaving the Hokage to confront Orochimaru face to face. The arm of the Grim Reaper eats into Orochimaru's belly and latches on the his soul. When a soul is taken with the Reaper Death Seal, the human will never rest in peace, but will suffer eternally!

Shino appears as Sasuke and Kankuro battle. Leaving Shino to handle Kankuro, Sasuke goes after Gaara. As Temari escapes into the forest carrying Gaara, he regains consciousness. Sasuke catches up and the two prepare to fight. Just then, Gaara seems to be in agony and half his face begins to contort. Something inside Gaara is awakening!

Half of Gaara's body has transformed and Sasuke continues his battle against him. Gaara is relentless and the reveals the reason he fights Sasuke is because he too seeks power, and his eyes are filled with hatred! To Gaara, fighting means to kill, and he measures the value of his existence by that.

By the time Naruto and Sakura catch up, Sasuke has exhausted his strength and collapsed. Naruto is shocked at Gaara's appearance, half his body transformed into a monster, and tries to escape with Sasuke. But Gaara attacks Sasuke again. Sakura tries to protect Sasuke, but succumbs to the attack. Suddenly, Gaara holds his head in pain. Memories of his troubled childhood are filling his mind!

Naruto is helpless against Gara's immense power. While Naruto declares that he fights for his comrades, Gaara says he fights for himself. And soon, Gaara's sad past is revealed, a past in which he was feared as a monster and no one acknowledged him. Naruto compares Gaara's past with his own and begins to feel compassion towards him.

Naruto is helpless against Gaara's overpowering strength. However, after seeing Sasuke risking life and limb to save him and Sakura, Naruto remembers Iruka's words that when a person really wants to protect something important that's when he finds true strength. He garners an unbelievable amount of Chakra and brings Gaara down. But just as he is about to deliver the final blow, Gaara's true form manifests itself!
