Harry's kidnapper has sold him to a carnival freak show where he is billed as “Hargo the Alien,” and his transmissions from the Big Giant Head are a huge hit.

Mary has been named Dean of Pendleton's School of Arts and Sciences. She moves into a nicer office and takes Nina with her; Dick tells Nina he didn't like her work anyway. Mary tries to cheer up Dick by authorizing some new office furniture. Dick, on the other hand, jumps to the conclusion that since his girlfriend is the dean, he's the dean.

With Mary's promotion to dean, Dick soon learns that he's being perceived as Mrs. Albright. While he's a bit uncomfortable with his new status, it doesn't seem to bother Mary at all. When Mrs. Dubcek's grandson opens a lemonade stand, Tommy and Harry open their own but have no success. And when Sally learns that Don has had other women in his life, she tracks down all his ex-girlfriends.

Dick gets a Fuzzy Buddy Jiggly Pig as a giveaway at a local burger joint. Nina, a serious Fuzzy Buddy collector, goes crazy when she sees it and persuades Dick to give it to her. Sally, shopping at a pharmacy, witnesses a stampede when a new shipment of Fuzzy Buddies arrives. Sucked into the excitement, she brings home a bag of the stuffed toys.

Since Mary became dean, Dick feels she's been neglecting him. He's even more unhappy when he learns he's about to have a new officemate: Dr. Jennifer Ravelli, a comparative literature professor from Harvard.

Don warns Dick to tell Mary about his new relationship with Jennifer before the whole thing blows up in his face.

Sally urges Dick to be honest and tell Jennifer that it's over. Dick tries, but Jennifer doesn't get it. Don takes Sally bowling and finds her unorthodox style a bit alarming. Mary blames herself for losing Dick and tells Nina that she's really blown it.

When Sally learns that Playpen Magazine is coming to campus and will pay women $600 to pose naked, she's ready to sign up, despite the fact that women at Pendleton are planning to picket. Sally tells Dick her plan and he supports her, even though Mary observes that it's so demeaning.

Mary is busy planning her annual New Year's fondue party, but Dick can't understand why this holiday is such a big deal. Mary says it's a time to remember everything he's accomplished in the past year. Meanwhile, Harry is having a huge New Year's bash at the bar, and Tommy volunteers his services as party coordinator.

Chaos ensues when the Big Giant Head, responding to a three-year-old request, switches Sally's body with Dick's. Both Dick and Sally are completely freaked out to be in different bodies. Harry immediately puts in a request for them to be returned to their original bodies, but they're informed that they've been put on a waiting list.

Dick receives a letter inviting him to a Solomon family reunion in Indiana. He calls Aunt Florence and happily accepts. Dick invites Mary to accompany the aliens to the reunion. Tommy feels compelled to remind Dick that these people are not their family. Dick says it's no problem since Aunt Florence hasn't seen Richard since he was five years old.

The aliens are introduced to the concept of paying income tax. Dick has been warned that it's a complicated process, but the aliens find the tax forms silly and boring as they make their first attempt to file a return. It isn't long, however, before they're as dazed and confused as any human taxpayer.

The aliens and Mrs. Dubcek start feuding because she won't get their plumbing fixed and they won't pay their rent. When Sally tells Don that she wishes someone would get her out of the apartment, he thinks she wants him to propose.

Mary confides to Dick that Chancellor Stevens seems to be avoiding her, while both Dick and Mary observe that he's spending a lot of time with Judith. When Mary doesn't get the memo about a re-scheduled meeting, she is even more apprehensive about what's going on.

Vicki has a vision of Harry as the dancing baby from “Ally McBeal” and later tells him that she wants him to be the father of her child. When Harry shares this news with Dick, Dick reminds him that his child may turn out to be a large purple tube.

Nina tells Dick that the Fleischman Foundation called to say that Dick's grant application has arrived just as Dick is opening a chain letter. He has no idea how a letter could give him luck, good or bad, and Mary observes that belief in chain letters is a silly superstition. But Nina is adamant that he follows the directions in the letter to avoid potentially disastrous results.

When Nina leaves Dick's grade reports on the computer and he has no idea how to retrieve them, it's clear that he's a physics professor who is computer illiterate. Dick can't accept that he, a superior being, can’t operate a computer. He returns his old computer to the electronics store and insists that it's broken.

Mary is concerned that she and Dick don’t communicate well, so they go to a New Age couples' retreat accompanied by Harry and Vicki. Meanwhile, in an Italian restaurant, Sally catches the eye of a tough-looking guy and soon, he's sending flowers and asking her out.

It finally dawns on Dick, Harry and Tommy that their apartment has become a wreck since Sally moved out. They suggest to Sally that she still might like to do their cleaning, but she wants no part of it. When Dick asks Mary to clean for them, she refuses, but she does give him the phone number of Cathy, her maid.

When Don reminds Dick that his birthday is May 5, Dick orders the other aliens to throw him a surprise party. Dick invites his class and makes it clear that the gifts he receives could easily affect their grades. Dick is approached by Charlotte who first claims to be a housewife auditing his class but then reveals herself to be a reporter working on a story about greatness.

When Dick's co-worker, Professor Strudwick, gets a lot of attention because of his newly published book on physics, Dick claims he couldn't care less. In fact, he says, the whole thing's a colossal bore. But he's secretly overcome with envy.

When Sally, Harry and Tommy barely miss being hit by a falling chandelier at a local restaurant, they feel as if their near-death experience has made them view the world in a whole new way. They look at everything with wonder and amazement as if they're seeing things for the very first time.

Harry gets a transmission from the Big Giant Head: the mission has received a sub-standard evaluation, and the BGH is on his way to Earth to check things out. The aliens go into panic mode, each blaming the other for the shortcomings of the mission.

Dick's resentful that he's lost his command, but Tommy reminds everyone that they're inches away from having their whole mission cancelled, so they'd all better shape up.
