1 Heaven Can Wait

Charlie tries to comfort Spirit Alex in the OR as they watch Dawn, Maggie and Reycraft struggle to repair her stabbed heart. Before Spirit Alex can fully comprehend that she’s dying on the operating table, and that Charlie really can see ghosts – she pops – waking up in a “dream” that takes her back to her childhood home in St. Catharines. A chance encounter with a lost loved one, puts Alex face‐to‐ face with a repressed memory that holds the key to her past, present and future. Meanwhile, Dawn manages to stitch the hole in Alex’s heart, only to be convinced by a passionate Charlie that something may still be wrong with Alex – leading the team to discover a deadly mistake that Dawn has minutes to rectify. Joel is pulled to the ER to treat Alex’s assailant – and when his patient pleads to let him die – Joel’s morals as a man are tested against his ethics as a doctor. After witnessing Charlie’s fanatical love for Alex, Maggie realizes she doesn’t have those kinds of feelings with Gavin. Dawn saves Alex’s life – leading Spirit Alex back to the halls of Hope Zion and a very soulful reunion with Charlie.
2 Kiss Me Goodbye

Alex is still in a coma, and her impatient Spirit wants her to wake up. Charlie encourages Spirit Alex to let her body recover and enjoy the time they have together in the ‘spirit‐world.’ Charlie and Joel come face‐to‐face for the first time after their fight, and Alex feels for Joel, who still very much blames himself for her accident. Joel welcomes a distraction when he is called to treat the necrotic leg of a animated drug addict. Still searching for redemption, he makes a pact with the patient to see him through this ordeal, and when an unexpected obstacle arises, Joel finds himself deeper into his downward spiral. Maggie and her new boss – the militaristic, pragmatic Dr. Katz – treat a 5‐month pregnant woman who suffers an aneurysm in the hospital, that renders her brain‐dead. Her Spirit pleads with Charlie to convince her husband to fight for the life inside of her – their son. After witnessing the couple’s parental love – Alex discovers she wants to become a mother. Gavin and Maggie stumble through the awkward phase of a breakup just as a “kiss” wakes Alex up from her coma.
3 Awakenings

Alex is awake, but still not back to her old self. She feels like a stranger in her own hospital. Dawn has given strict orders for her recovery plan, much to chagrin of a restless Charlie. Throughout the day, Alex is visited by the staff of Hope Zee, but in the end it is a patient who gives her the opportunity she needs to truly make progress. Charlie and Joel square‐off over differing treatment options when two fused together burn victims are brought into the ER. More heat is added to the fire when Charlie discovers Joel has been visiting Alex. Maggie finds herself in a whirlwind of emotions triggered from the fallout of her miscarriage, and it seems every doctor at HZ has their own ideas on how to best manage her outbursts. A menacing ghost presence has Charlie on edge.
4 Stand By Me

Charlie and Alex try to navigate their way back as a couple as Alex faces her first day back on the floor as a doctor. It is none other than the Chief of Surgery who will act as a “buddy colleague” during her rounds. No sweat... right? Alex comes to realize she may have some unresolved issues of her own relating to her stabbing. Charlie is visited by one of the happiest Spirits he’s ever encountered who reminds him what life can truly offer. While trying to be a Good Samaritan, Joel unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of a hostage situation at a local street clinic. He and the clinic’s tough, no‐nonsense doctor rely on their “street‐smarts” to save a very injured patient. Gavin meets a new colleague at Hope Zion who is able to help him navigate his feelings – leading to some welcomed “enlightenment”.
5 Breaking Away

A car accident brings a ‘she‐bear’ mother and her son to the hospital. Alex and Joel discover the mother is in need of a transplant – and her son is adamant he be involved. Dawn instructs them on procedure and before they know it the trio are brought before an ethics panel – including one very unconvinced psychiatrist. Meanwhile, the mother’s Spirit is determined to get Charlie to do her bidding, which includes stepping out of his comfort zone when comforting her son. Charlie finds himself pulled into the ER to help Zach with a patient whose obsession might cost him his life. Rian and Maggie search the hospital for Hope Zion’s very first “Code Brown” which results in having to answer to a shaken Dawn.
6 Joel 2:31 (a.k.a Apocalypse Now)

Alex is pulled into the ER on one of it’s busiest night of the year – and is about to find out if full moons really do cause strange things to happen. First up, is a chance encounter with Joel that has Alex questioning if the spark between them is heating up. When her patient starts exhibiting contradicting symptoms – Alex pulls Joel and Maggie on the case to help her solve the mystery ‐‐ and the results are shocking. Charlie tries to figure out where he wants to stand with Dawn, and is sidetracked when an in‐patient tries to convince him she’s dead. Jimmy Dey and Rian assist in her treatment, and afterward Charlie has a renewed sense of what it means to be alive. Zach gets a surprise visit from his son that leads him to re‐ evaluate his actions as a father. Joel gets advice from Jimmy Dey, which has him make one last pit stop as he heads out of town...
7 The Way We Were

Shahir is a young woman’s only hope to restore her memory after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at a young age. He finds himself enlisting Alex’s help to calm his nerves – which are rattled when he loses his key resident on the surgery. Alex finds herself asked to help Shahir on a very delicate maneuver... on a day she’s having self‐doubt as a doctor. An error has Rian and Reycraft breaking the news to a patient very close to Reycraft’s past – his mentor. While preparations are underway for a fix, Reycraft finds patient’s got a few secrets of his own, and the implications are weighty for the both of them. Charlie and Dawn’s plans are interrupted when a con‐man Spirit begs Charlie to do ‘just one thing’ for him... all day long.
8 The Heartbreak Kid

Joel and Alex try to make dinner plans – but not before Joel gets wrangled into working a day at the street clinic. It proves to be more than he bargained for when a chatty, recovering addict, Teddy, graces him with her presence – and an ever changing medical story. Joel has to use his street smarts to try and rescue Teddy before time runs out. Alex and Charlie try to find a new groove as co‐ workers, when an injured 13‐year old girl arrives after falling off a roof. Things would move a lot faster if her love‐addled Spirit kept quiet and let Charlie focus on his job and not his feelings. Alex has to make an OR call that causes controversy with her fellow residents. Syd’s practice exam on Maggie has Maggie facing hospital wide embarrassment – which she must put aside when David Zarb (EP 302) returns to Hope Zee for one special hello and an emotional goodbye.

Zach pulls together a ‘polytrauma team’ to save the life of Nathan “The Rocket” Stewart after his latest race track injury. Alex, Joel, Shahir and Maggie must tag in and out of the marathon surgery to fix the driver. When Alex and Joel butt heads over the best course of treatment for the patient, they can’t help but reflect on their own bumps in the road as “the right team.” It’s Charlie’s day off – and his expectations of a quiet morning are interrupted with the arrival of a beautiful woman passing time in the hotel bar. Charlie contemplates a romantic life without Alex...until an emergency has him rushing back to the hospital. Dana tries to help a frustrated patient – only to be told by Zach and Jimmy there’s more to her story than meets the eye. Maggie decides to confront Syd on a matter she can’t ignore.

Alex, Maggie and Dana spend the morning hearing celebrated surgeon Thor MacLeod talk about his Near Death Experience. When a fellow fan loses control and nearly dies, Alex finds herself in the hospital alongside Thor, in an effort to save the man’s life. But when Thor’s connection to the patient is revealed, Alex can’t help but wonder if the doctor is truly who he appears to be. Charlie avoids Thor’s “insights” and tries to bounce an idea off Shahir that could help solve the medical mystery of the patient’s Spirit. Feeling less than himself as ever, Joel escapes Hope Zee by immersing himself at the street clinic – only to face a day of bad news and heavy consequences. Maggie has to find the courage to confront Dana on an issue involving her daughter, Molly Kinney.
11 The Parent Trap

Alex gears herself up for a night home alone, when an emergency phone call has her playing “aunty Alex” to Dana’s daughter, Molly. Dana barges to Alex’s condo where Alex gets a taste of the push‐and‐pull between mother’s and teenage daughters, before asking Dana a very important question of her own. Charlie faces a tough fight night of his own when two female MMA fighters go for Round 2 in Zach’s ER. In spite of their tough exteriors, Charlie must gain the trust of one fighter if he is going to be able to save her limb... and life. A foster mother places her heart in Dawn’s hands, while her foster‐daughter is keen on breaking hospital rules to keep the two of them together. Maggie discovers the Hope Zee staff has been rated on “Grade Your MD”.
12 Hearts of Glass

When a donor heart becomes available, Alex and Dawn jump at the opportunity to provide the ailing Leila (Ep 311) with her sorely needed replacement. Wanting the heart for himself, however, is the litigation‐happy Elliot Stout (Ep 311). Also on the transplant list and is ready to sue, Elliot creates an ethical and legal dilemma for our doctors with major repercussions. Charlie and Joel meet a patient with exotic hardware implanted into his legs, only to discover that he’s risked his health by resorting to Medical Tourism in the hopes of lengthening his limbs. After falling asleep in surgery, Maggie is having a hard time balancing studying for the boards and fulfilling her hospital duties. When a patient forces her to think outside the box, she enlists Dr. Dey to get back on track.

Alex steps away from the hospital for a hike in the woods, but can’t get away from medicine when she finds a trapped teenager in a dire situation. Charlie needs Joel’s help when a woman from the clinic won’t be seen by anyone else, and Zach has his hands full when an exotic dancer comes into the ER.

Alex and Maggie find themselves in over their head while trying to save an unborn child with a complicated condition. With the Jewish‐Orthodox Dr. Katz sidelined at the request of the lesbian couple, there’s only so much they can do without Hope Zion’s leading OB/GYN. Joel struggles to find common ground with his father when he is in town to receive an award, and gets some help from Alex while writing a speech for the ceremony. When the senior Goran’s health begins to falter, Joel realizes that his father’s research might be closer to home than he had imagined. Charlie gets a weird feeling when his patient’s 20‐year‐old grandson begins to act out, enlisting Dr. Dey to help determine a root cause. While helping a young Spirit come to terms with what happened to him – Charlie helps shed light on the lives of a few patients at the hospital.
15 Remains of the Day

Alex, Maggie and Rian could use a little help studying for their surgical board exams – it seems a good teacher goes a long way. So when a high school English teacher comes in for treatment, Alex finds herself receiving a few life lessons of her own. Joel’s consumed with a patient’s vanishing bones. A patient, who is very particular with her lists, has Charlie working through a long list of medical reasons she could be flatlining in the OR. Dawn and Shahir have proof of their own – and Charlie has to come up with a defense that doesn’t rely on the help of a ghost. The future of a teenage girl rests in Dawn’s hands; and a future she doesn’t know if she’s ready for, weighs heavy on her heart. A surprise performance has Alex searching for Charlie in the doctor’s lounge.
16 A Simple Plan

Alex finds herself under the thumb of her overprotective birth partner – leading her to wonder what kind of plans are truly worth making. When a patient comes in, two days before he’s set for prison – Alex and Charlie must sift through his many secrets to find the truth about what really happened to save his life. Maggie and Zach treat a couple on their way to see the Northern Lights when a surprise diagnoses changes their futures forever – leading Zach to open up to Maggie about his own family secrets. Joel enlists Shahir’s help to get a young bride ready to talk down the aisle – but her ambition gets the most of her, prompting Joel to repair her not only physically, but also heal a bad family rift. Charlie finds a spirit loitering the halls, and when he discovers why he finds himself facing a very emotional moment form his past.

Alex is asked on a ‘consult’ by the ladies at Hope Zion and starts her day off with a great surprise. Later, while on rounds, Alex confides in Dana that she hasn’t been too honest with the women in her life… and after an emergency life‐ saving manoeuvre on a very chatty mother of two has Alex wondering if its time for her to make an important call. Meanwhile, Joel has something he needs to ask Alex. Before he can find a private moment, a mini‐van with several Varsity hockey players comes rushing in – and it’s up to Joel, Shahir and a very high‐tech piece of equipment to save them. Sydney’s fiancé comes into the hospital – but unbeknownst to Syd and Maggie – not for the reasons one might ever expect. Charlie is visited by the Spirit of a young man who dispels primal and philosophical advice – prompting Charlie to consider some big actions of his own.
18 All the Pretty Horses

When a devastating accident requires the help of our doctors at an offsite army base, Charlie and Joel flip a coin to decide who will take the call. When Joel wins the toss, he and Zach depart for a heart‐pounding day as they attempt to save the life of a soldier in dire circumstances. After years of preparation and study, Alex, Maggie, and Rian are finally ready to face the gauntlet that is the Surgical Boards. Ready to become fully certified surgeons, the trio are faced with a litany of interesting circumstances made all the more tense by a major development in Alex's life. Back at the hospital, Charlie and Dawn work closely together to save the life of a young man suffering from hypothermia.

About this show

In Saving Hope, when charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris at Toronto’s Hope Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos – and his fiancée and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid, in a state of shock. Along with newly‐arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran Alex races to save Harris' life. As the action unfolds, comatose Dr. Harris explores the hospital halls in “spirit” form, not sure if he's a ghost or a figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors, press on to save his life and those of their other patients, as they deal with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their daily struggle to keep hope alive.
