It's the week before Christmas, and Sidney is busy with services, carols, and the church nativity. But a missing groom at a winter wedding draws Sidney and his best friend Geordie into a murky case involving a strip club, a haunted toyshop, and echoes of an unsolved murder from years past. And as if that's not enough on Sidney's plate, Amanda is about to give birth any minute.

Sidney thinks nothing of a dead bird he finds in the vicarage. But when more dead birds are found at the scenes of two recent deaths, he starts to become worried. Has his clandestine relationship with Amanda made him a target? And what does all of it have to do with a home for the disabled?

A local cricket match brings the village together, but a clash between the team captain and the new Pakistani batsman bring tensions to the surface. When an apparent bout of food poisoning lays the team low, it's only the new batsman who fails to pull through. As Sidney navigates the darker underbelly of village life, he realizes his own secrets may not be as safe as he had hoped.

When Leonard is caught in an armed robbery at the post office, the shy curate—and his blossoming romance—becomes the center of attention. As Geordie investigates the criminals, and their worrisome echoes of Bonnie and Clyde, Sidney is drawn to the young woman trapped in a suburban life from which she longs to escape.

The body of a woman found in a factory seems to be a case of reckless misadventure, until Geordie starts to unearth signs of a cover-up. But the annual police ball is fast approaching, and events threaten to come to a head, as the personal lives of Geordie, Leonard, Mrs. Maguire, and Sidney himself all start to unravel.

Pursuing answers for Mrs. Maguire, Sidney has found himself in an isolated community with his dog collar missing, plagued with self-doubt, and only his wits to keep him alive. Can Geordie track down his best friend in time to save him?

A missing child strikes fear into the heart of the village, and it's up to Sidney to rally the community at its time of greatest need. But he's facing his own personal crisis, forced to finally choose between duty and love.
